Replace the strings IMMEDIATELY. I had bad tuning issues, but it was properly set up on delivery. Just needed good strings attached properly.
100% of the time, when you get a new guitar, put a new set of strings on it...super easy and cheap and light years better than the (usually) garbage that comes from the factory.

Also, if a guitar comes with 9's and you like 11's, read or ask about different string sizes affecting the nut.

I really loved my Gibson SG. It had a great sound and was really light. It set well on my leg. I personally hate Les Paul style guitars. I find them very awkward when sitting down.

I would take him to a guitar store and let him handle a few to see how they feel in his hands. Be sure to sit down and stand up with it.
Great advice!

Off topic: I wish they'd let the potential buyer test drive/test mow lawnmowers before purchase (especially the riding/zero turn type).

Repped you (and the OP).

I need a beginner solid body electric guitar (or amp combo) for my 17 yr old son coming from playing an acoustic. Any recommendations?
Have him try different guitars at the guitar store. Buy a used electric (~$250-$300 at most), much better value for the money. When he gets more into it he can buy a new one or a nicer one.
