You are right.

Costco soil = 55 quarts = 2.14 cu. ft.

Each bag costs $8.99, that's $4.2 per cu. ft.

Miracle Gro = 0.75 cu. ft.

Each bag costs $2, that's $2.67 per cu. ft.

You can buy bulk perilite, or mix it with potting soil, or add dry compost or composted matter to help with water retention (regular garden soil typically does not retain enough water for bountiful returns in raised beds)

Dirt from your yard will work, or get some fill, which you can normally find free.

Yes just add a bag of peat moss or other soil conditioner. You want to loosen/lighting it up to go from this garden soil to more of a potting mix.

Lowes just a similar sale 2 weeks ago. They always have a spring sale at mid to end of April that lasts 2 weeks. I guess you missed it.
