Killin' me with the guitar deals today! First the Gretsch (in gold, much easier to pass) and then THIS?!?! Ugh! I gotta stay away from this place!

I have a junky squire strat that played terrible. I'm tempted to pick this up because it would likely be a little better...and I've wanted a humbucker pickup. I'm just torn on waiting until I'm a little older and might have more time/money to invest in a different model.

This would most likely be a great guitar (I say most likely, because EVERY guitar is different, and nearly every one, whether $99 or $1,999) will need some amount of setup and adjustment to play the way you prefer.

One thing to mention on this, is that it is a 1" shorter scale than normal, so it feels a bit different than your normal Strat or Tele. If your hands are a little smaller and you have trouble stretching for some chord shapes and stuff, this may be a great pick for you. It's not a huge difference, but it's there. I have a Mustang that has the same scale and I love it.

I would say that in general this is more of an "extra" kinda guitar, or something fun/a little different for someone that already has the Strat, Tele, Les Paul, SG, etc, bases covered.

But as with anything musical, forgot what some faceless jerk on the interwebz sez and get whatever you like! It's your music and your voice. Smilie Wave

I'd say maybe wait for the Strat if it were going to be your first/only electric for awhile. This is a little more of a niche kinda guitar. Smilie

It's very funny to see this deal pop up again as I just got rid of mine yesterday - traded it for an Ibanez semi-hollow guitar. The Duo-Sonic is a very cool little guitar, but it never clicked with me. I always wanted to play my Jaguar over it.

Just acquired a Les Paul standard premium quilt top a week ago. Now I have an LP, SG, Strat, and a Jackson with a floyd. Why is this still tempting? And I'm still a horrible guitar player, only been at it a year.

I'd recommended trying both in a store first, because they'll feel very different in the hands and against the body. I discovered that a Jazzmaster/Jaguar body is more comfortable for me.

Agreed, I bought this the last year around this time and love it, It's a nice change up from the more traditional styled guitars. And while the shorter scale does help with the stretching to reach far apart notes, it also makes some chord shapes more difficult since there is less space between frets to place your fingers. So like most things in life its a trade off, but this is definitely nice sounding and fun guitar to play around with.

I would say the Strat is a more versatile piece of kit than this one. And not really comparable anyway as this one is short scale.

If you search past deals Adorama has put the MiM brown sunburst HSS Strat on sale fairly frequently for $399. Note that it's the older model and it's not a "classic" 3-pickup Strat model, though. If you are willing to go used you should be able to find a lightly used recent vintage MiM "regular" Strat pretty easily on CL or FB Marketplace for $350 +/- $50.

Don't overlook Craigslist for local guitars people are selling, the best deals I have gotten have been there, not here. Plus you get to see it before you hand over money for it. You can probably get a MiM Stratocaster $350-$450 if you are patient. Make offers, if people say no then wait on the next one. My immaculate MiA Stratocaster was $700 from a motivated seller.
