Will this pair with the climb? Is the climb needed or do you get enough with the built in grade adjustment?

Yes, this pair with climb but no, you don't need a climb. With 16% maximum simulated grade, you will get more than enough resistance at the hill. I have a CORE for 7 months, riding almost every weekday and very happy with it. If you want a direct drive trainer, go with this deal, best price you can find.

I am on my 4th core. Make sure yours aren't defective when they arrive. Works perfect with the climb and rockr adds a whole new experience with Zwift.

This or the TacX Neo trainer?
I recommend trying both if you can, and ideally side by side. Call around local bike shops.

The TacX Neo is better on paper, but I personally liked the Wahoo more and recently got the Kickr Core Smart. The things I didn't like about the TacX upon demo'ing:

1. It has a virtual flywheel that uses 32 magnets. It didn't feel as natural to me. It about 90% as good as the Wahoo, but not completely as good.
2. Virtual Tire Slip is an issue well documented on the TacX. If you exert a lot of power quickly, the flywheel "slips" and feels like the tire is slipping. This happens when doing a sprint, for example. Although it is said that the issue seldom happens, I was able to re-create every time if I sprinted, slowed down, and sprinted again. This said, the aforementioned isn't "normal" riding.
3. The TacX Neo has some wiggle left to right. I felt like it wasn't enough to feel natural, and instead felt like I was getting flopped around. When having an iPad on the handlebars, it was flopping the iPad around.

When I ordered mine from Backcountry.com, I specifically asked for new inventory, and when I received it, I called Wahoo to share my serial number and get a manufactured date, which was January 2019. They said the issues are resolved with that batch. We'll see.

Note on the TacX, you need to by a cassette. A moot point for me since I have a 9 speed and had to buy a cassette anyhow since Wahoo Smart comes with an 11 speed.

Also note that the Core doesn't come with a cassette (~$60 + $30 in tools to change) nor cadence sensor ($40). When you factor those in, it's not much more for the Smart.

This all said, most of the experts (Shane Miller, DC Rainmaker) use the TacX. But again, demo'ing them is the way to go. On paper, TacX is better with the exception of not being Climb-capable.

I went with the Wahoo and have 2 Zwift rides in. REI has a 20% sale coming up soon too, btw. Good luck all.

If you're going to do this find DC Rainmmaker's clever training code. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/clever-training-vip It's only $5 compared to the $20, with the same benefits.

You'll end up with about $70 in rewards too so if you're going to purchase anything else with it maybe wait and use the rewards

Wow..thanks for the headsup on this! Also I wouldn't say it is the same..according the DC Rainmaker's site it say that $5 is for lifetime VIP.

"Discount VIP membership not $19.99/year but $4.99 for lifetime for DCR Readers!"

I added a computer and the vip membership to my cart, input the sale code and got this error:

Coupon 'VIPSALE' was not applied. Please ensure that you are logged in or join our VIP program to apply this promotion to your order.

I tried calling and was on hold for ages and the automated system said wait time 4 minutes but got nothing. So I'm not sure if my item isn't eligible for the sale or if i need to buy membership first and then checkout? Very confused and I dont want the membership unless it applies to my item. Wish i could talk to a CR.

UPDATE, says on item page not eligible for discounts. Lame. a $900 trainer that costs a fortune to ship (free with VIP) is but not a $400 computer?

Yeah, I was trying to grab a Garmin 530 computer and no go. I'm glad I didn't as I saw some reviews on rei's website faulting the qc of the product.

I ended up using the coupon towers a kickr climb instead

garmins and wahoo computers were excluded from code, the older garmin x20 models were/are on a regular sale at many places.

My kickr core from black friday has not had issues so far. At the time the summer batch had some issues they fixed, I did not keep reading what else people had trouble with.
