You can also put a Corvette engine in a Malibu but why??

This is strictly a nostalgia thing and you can put every arcade rom from the 80s on a thumb drive and play them with a proper Xbox controller or one like it. I just don't get it. It's like the popular photo app that makes your photos/videos look like they're takin with a 1981 camcorder. It makes zero sense to me why people blow wads of cash on this kind of stuff. My wife wants the one that has Joust and a few other games and I refuse to buy it.
It's more like an old school Type R engine swap into a sleeper car. You start with something that has potential and install better parts in it. Not everyone has access nor the time to machines that can mill out the parts to construct the cabinet. Modding an existing cabinet is much easier to do.

If the controls on it are crap the TV and cabinet might be worth it if they are easy to mod out but that's a big if.

For me, this is a tempting piece of junk that would take up a large amount of space for the amount of entertainment I MIGHT get out of it if I could even mod it.

I have a few emulators running, just want a cabinet for it. Electronics and software are easy for me but I have no time or tools to build a machine.

A cheap cabinet, maybe with a screen and speakers I can use, is worthwhile for me. I have to see the guts but if I could reuse or replace the controls, I'd have a functioning arcade machine. And I can still use my Bluetooth controllers with it for other games.

The idea behind these is awesome but the implementation is less than enjoyable. The original thread when these were pre-order items was pretty long and had a lot of debate. I finally tried one of these out at Costco recently and it's just a kids toy. Really not worth it for adults.

I've owned real arcade cabinets years ago and these things are nowhere close. They are mass market low quality internals vs the arcade games they are based on. The artwork looks great but that's about it.

I bought and tested some LED lit arcade controls (zero delay, USB interface) that just feel tons better. I paid $30/set but for the non-LED list (like the ones used on these cabinets) they are $15 normal price on Amazon. Those come with 10 buttons and the joystick. You can easily do a 2x3 row of buttons, 2 additional above for coin/start and 2 side buttons for pinball style games in a portable setup or modify for a 2 player control board. Pre-built models are available too but not sure of quality but those are $40 - $50 I think for a single player setup with USB. Spinner is extra but you can adapt some usb volume knob devices to be used as a spinner for Mame.

If you want a full size cabinet you either need to find a cheap one locally to retrofit or build your own which will cost more than $75 unfortunately - depends on how much you want to pay vs the experience you want.

is it software moddable? or do internals need to be changed?
Guys, these are very easy to mod. A raspberry pi 3 and a video adapter so the pi can hookup to the monitor and you're in business. You can download a image on an SD card, stick it in the pi and you have hundreds of games. A pi and video adapter are under 100 bucks. I've modded an arcade1up street fighter and galaga cabinet. One for vertical games and one for horizontal fight type games. You can also grab up to a 20" monitor at a thrift store for $10 and install that and you won't need the video adapter. With the asteroids you'll want to add a joystick so drill a hole or just buy another control panel for about $25 with the hole layout you want. I upgraded my joysticks anyhow so I may pickup another one of these cabs to mod at $75. You will want the riser to bring it to regular arcade height.

You would need a $30 board to connect standard HDMI things to the monitor. Not difficult.

Wish the Rampage Cabinet was on sale, just because I think you would get more fun out of the cooperative gameplay- plus getting to hear "Elf needs food badly!"

Unless you really want arcade cabinets and want to spend extra money, you're best waiting on sale prices for the upgraded gen 2 cabinets ala mortal kombat

Brickseek saying three in stock at my local store. Go there and no asteroid units. I wonder if brickseek was counting the other units(street fighter, spaced invaders etc)

Really only good if you have the space in your mancave and have lots of friends to party with.
You would probably have a stroke if you saw my basement, thinking an Arcade1up takes up space and requires many friends to play. (10+ Pinball machines, 10 Full sized real Arcade Cabs, redemption machines, slot machines/Video poker, etc etc) Wink
