Does the asteroids game itself closely resemble the real thing?
(I saw on youtube people were modifying the spinner/dial that it comes with by adding clearance and weight).

Except the "spinner" in this makes it basically unplayable. You have to drop another $75+ for the upgraded spinner. Cabs are very small, basically good for kids.
Tempest requires a great spinner. Anything else is just a waste of money.

We got pac man last year when it was on sale (i think like 85 was the end cost) and I feel it is worth it. Kids love it, wife loves it, I play it and like it. I would get sf ii if it was at this price.

I have Atari version with 11 games including Asteroid with a riser. I had a house warming party this past weekend and this arcade along with the Street Fighter arcade1up were huge hits. Kids and adults both had lots of fun with these machines. Just make sure to buy the risers to bring it to standing height.

I feel it was definitely worth it for $250 and it's a steal at $75 and even at $150.

I played with this at Costco for about 10 minutes while waiting on my wife. It's actually pretty large. Sitting and playing height.

But it was really terrible. Not worth $75 because after 5 minutes you'll be annoyed.

Buttons and controls are really low quality. Not enjoyable to use them.

Games are super limited to just a few. Guess you could add MAME support somehow, but see point one about controls.
I don't think people really emphasize just how low-quality and cheap the controls are. The scroll wheels used for Tempest was damn near grinding less than 10 minutes into playing.

Almost every Wal-Mart near me has these for $75 on BS with a lot in stock. So I'll buy multiple and resell for huge profits!!

No but seriously, for $75, why not?
Because it's not worth $75, that's why. Good luck getting stuck with the inventory.

The idea behind these is awesome but the implementation is less than enjoyable. The original thread when these were pre-order items was pretty long and had a lot of debate. I finally tried one of these out at Costco recently and it's just a kids toy. Really not worth it for adults.

I've owned real arcade cabinets years ago and these things are nowhere close. They are mass market low quality internals vs the arcade games they are based on. The artwork looks great but that's about it.

I bought and tested some LED lit arcade controls (zero delay, USB interface) that just feel tons better. I paid $30/set but for the non-LED list (like the ones used on these cabinets) they are $15 normal price on Amazon. Those come with 10 buttons and the joystick. You can easily do a 2x3 row of buttons, 2 additional above for coin/start and 2 side buttons for pinball style games in a portable setup or modify for a 2 player control board. Pre-built models are available too but not sure of quality but those are $40 - $50 I think for a single player setup with USB. Spinner is extra but you can adapt some usb volume knob devices to be used as a spinner for Mame.

If you want a full size cabinet you either need to find a cheap one locally to retrofit or build your own which will cost more than $75 unfortunately - depends on how much you want to pay vs the experience you want.
I really want to build a MAME cabinet. Should I get one of these or try to find an old cabinet I can retrofit?

I was being sarcastic with the buying all the inventory. You know ONE person will do it expecting a huge profit.

I am debating the same, seems like a cheap way to get the cabinet prebuilt and then just update with better hw.

Props given to OP. But if anybody's thinking of classic arcade games, FYI, you can Essentially buy all the parts with a modern board, and load up with like dozens of classic arcade games, and the whole thing will be very close to original playability.
