This device doesn't have a monthly charge. It's only if you want to add on cellular filtering that they charge $5. I have had a Circle for almost two years now and only recently paid anything because I wanted the older kids' cellphones on the account.
Right, but...
1. Older units (OP deal) can no longer be subscribed for added features.
2. Without subscription, you only get basic wifi features.

So...$24 (end of life product) or $10-$60 for flexible product that you can subscribe.

For all those on the fence, I would give it a shot. I set up this last night and can say that I am very happy with the purchase. Admittedly, I did get on chat prior to ordering to confirm that there were NO subscription fees. A few takeaways:

1.The subscription fee only pertains to Circle Go (monitoring devices on mobile networks) -- Consider Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link both of which are free
2. Easy set up, but it took time to figure out what device was what on my network (i.e. The Murata device is really my Samsung phone)
3. I encounter the same issue that many have said about having dismal connection speeds when using filtering on a profile. When not using filtering on a profile the connection speeds are fine. By plugging in an Ethernet cable into the Circle device, after initial setup, the filtering works great and no more connection issues. I believe it has something to do with the way the device filters over WIFI.

Wrong .... it uses ARP spoofing. Could have negative effects to internet speed. I personally would never use it, there are other ways to implement what Circle achieves.
I might help if you shared what those ways are.

I'm embarrassed to say one of my projects at work is building a device that includes built in software to monitor and manage internet usage for kids. This thing blows our product away. I bought one to compare and never stopped using it. The ONLY thing I wish for is push notifications when it performs an activity such as blocking something or when kids try to use an internet device after hours. I totally forgot I set up a limit of no internet after 11pm (kids go to bed at 9) and they were up for new years eve and their phones stopped working. 'Dad, wifi is down' but it was working fine for me. Took me a while to figure out what the problem was.

Well, I wasn't enthousiastic because of the ARP spoofing, but was running out of options to get stuff under control, all my previous attempts having been easily easilly circumvented by resourceful teens. I was surprised by how effective circle has been at getting stuff under control in my household, all the while keeping the impact/nuisance to a minimal.

I don't know if mine is defective or what, but whenever I try to access the app it usually says it's not connected to the network and it also causes my wifi to randomly turn on and off. Sending it back.
