This beats the previous deal from Rakuten by a few $$, but it's from a bonafide reseller so you're sure to get the full factory warranty. Use your email promo code or just enter '2288' to get the extra $100 off in the cart.

I settled on it over nearby competitors (like the Costco Yamaha deal and various Denons) because it has Chromecast and Amazon Prime Music and SONOS compatibility built-in, along with the usual other stuff (Tidal, Deezer, Pandora, Spotify, etc.). Plus I value having a front HDMI input for intermittent use (like with a laptop when necessary)

From Onkyo website:
With high-current Dynamic Audio Amplification driving your surround system to THX Certified Select™ theater reference levels, you can transport your audience to the heart of the movie. DTS:X® and Dolby Atmos® soundtracks complement the latest in 4K HDR video via HDMI® pass-through supporting 4K/60p, Dolby Vision™, HDR10, HLG, and the BT.2020 color standard. Now with cross-compatible 3D audio upmixing solutions from Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X®, you can enjoy regular multichannel movies with spatially immersive sound. Cast music from mobiles to the receiver and other compatible systems in your home over Chromecast built-in, DTS Play-Fi®, or FlareConnect™ wireless multi-room platforms. AirPlay and Bluetooth® technology are also on board. Enjoy built-in streaming services as well Hi-Res Audio via network and USB, all with the dynamic and emotional sound only an Onkyo can deliver.
  • THX® Certified Select™ theater reference sound
  • 5.2.2-Channel Dolby Atmos® & DTS:X®
  • 210 W/ Ch (6 Ohms), 100 W/ Ch (8 Ohms)
  • HDMI® 7 In (1 front) / Main Out and Sub Out
  • 4K/60 Hz, HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision™, BT.2020, and HDCP 2.2
  • Supports Chromecast built-in and works with the Google Assistant
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi®, DTS Play-Fi®, AirPlay, Amazon Music, Spotify®, TIDAL, Deezer, Pandora®, TuneIn
  • Dynamic Audio Amplification with 4-Ohm speaker-driving capability
  • Powered Zone 2 for Audio Playback in 2nd Room
  • 384 kHz/32-bit DAC and VLSC™ Filtering for Superior Clarity

PSA: If you have an older ~2012 +/- Onkyo receiver that turns on but makes no sound, there was a
FREE REPAIR recall by Onkyo on them. Google it or contact Onkyo. They fixed mine for free w/ shipping, in about 3 weeks.

I bought this to replace a dying Onkyo TX-SR607 ... here are some of my thoughts on it:

- Volume setting needs to be higher on NR686 for similar sound level as SR607 .. typically im in the 60's for TV, 70's for music / movies.

- NR686 is more bass heavy than the SR607 , to me this sounds good

- I only use 2 fronts on it currently, I let the EQ/room calculator with include MIC do it's thing and it seemed way off (distance values). So I ended up just setting it manually. I don't remember having this problem on the SR607

- I Can't seem to get chromecast to show up / work... this may be because I denied some kind of opt in setting during setup, will need to factory reset to test

- Its longer/deeper than the SR607, so if you have a tight space you're installing this check the measurements.

Anyone care to comment on this VS the TSR-7850R, other than warranty?

Perfect timing thank you. Almost bought at Amazon yesterday, and today Amazon raised their price by $30.

Just looking at the amp section:

"100 W/Ch (8 Ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.08% THD, 2 Channels Driven, FTC)".

If this is true then it is a really good AVR for its price.

It was $179 during weekend. It's the first time that I see Frys raise price mid week.
This receiver, to my knowledge, has never been below $200 with only a promo code.... You got a link or a copy of the ad?
(I'm almost certain it would have been a different model, as I track their prices frequently...)

I don't think that's right. You may have another Onkyo model in mind (like one of the SR models).

I've had this receiver for a few months now have have been happy with it. Setup was easy, sounds great, and no issues so far.

Would this be a good match up with 2 CMT-340 SE + TBD sub?

Does this model have the infamous HDMI board issues that has plagued Onkyo lately?

They're very similar, except this has Chromecast audio built in (you need a separate dongle for the Yamaha), can do Amazon Prime Music (not sure about the Yamaha) is THX certified (not a big deal IMO), and has AccuEQ calibration vs Yamaha's YPAO. (I've read AccuEQ is a little better than the Yamaha's but haven't tested to can't confirm.)

Otherwise they are very comparable spec-wise. But this is of course $150 less.

EDIT: Onkyo has SONOS compatibility and the Yamaha has its own MusicCast line of wireless speakers.

Perfect timing. Our 6 year old Onkyo won't output audio anymore as of this morning and needed to buy something today. Thank you.

Wait! Read what I wrote about the FREE REPAIR recall by Onkyo!

Or better yet, sell me your old "broken" one for $10. Smilie
