What does this do for me that the 34.99 4k Amazon stick won't do? Serious question not trolling.

I like the remote which you can swipe. Imagine typing in your email or email, or even searching. How many left, right, up, and down buttons do you have to press? Swiping makes it a LOT easier. The remote is also compatible with Siri.

Additionally many of the apps (Netflix and Prime for sure) enable quick skip/back by pressing the edge of the touchpad. Vastly more convenient for FFWD/RWND than the nVidia Shield remote (or Roku or Chromecast) for me, YMMV, of course.
If you have half-decent HDMI CEC functionality on your TV, the AppleTV will get your TV on the correct input and can control TV volume, which is great. Some other newer gen streamers probably have this too, but my G1 Chromecast and super old Roku boxes do not, so that stands apart for me.

Can be used as a Hub for HomeKit if that's your chosen flavor of home automation.

I mainly use an AppleTV Gen 4 (like this box, but 1080p only) and an nVidia Shield for streaming. Both are really great. Both are really powerful and exhibit pretty much zero lag regardless of which app you're using. The AppleTV is much easier to use for me, due mostly to the remote (I also think the AppleTV layout is more intuitive, but reasonable people can disagree about that.) The nVidia Shield is definitely more easily customized, offers a superior gaming experience, and is more flexible as to what you can install on it and how you use it.
But if you just need a good, reliable streamer with very user-friendly controls, the AppleTV really shines. Whether it's worth the price increase is entirely up to you, of course.

I haven't used a $35 Amazon Fire Stick, but I doubt it offers an experience as refined as the AppleTV does, and would wonder what it offers above any newer SmartTV's built in apps?

I like the gigabit Ethernet port - never have to worry about wifi connections. I also appreciate the detachable power cord instead of using a wall wart...

To repeat what I stated in another thread. If you care or want to care about 4K streaming this is the premiere device. I'm an Apple hater as much as the next guy, but I prefer the Apple TV 4K out of the 6 other big name devices I've tried over the last year or so.

I was on the hunt for the best way to stream MKV 4K content specifically and Apple TV 4K is head and shoulders better than the rest. The power it has along with certain apps is the best for streaming 4K content over hard drives or media servers with no to very little buffering.

Not to mention the cheap 4K content that actually goes on sale in iTunes all the time. The deals that pop up might be the best available when comparing to other places that sell 4K digital content

Lastly, all the apps work smooth and flawlessly. Guess there is more money and development behind them. My Amazon Firestick 4K gives me problems randomly on the two main apps I use the most (Viki and Netflix) so I pretty much use it for Kodi only now.

I also don't have any other apple products, other than this. Another positive is that Apple TV doesn't share/sell you info to anybody and everybody who comes asking like other alternatives.

If you're streaming 4K from a network server, it won't stutter. I have both and like both, but running Infuse on a media server is seamless.

One thing with the 4K is that MLB app is garbage. It's crashing constantly for most people. There are threads on reddit about it and I experience it constantly--10 times or so per live game.
