This just isn't true anymore. Huge water flushes like 5gal were the standard a long time ago and they flushed well in that they didn't clog often there wasn't much science, didn't need to be 5gal is a lot of water and it moved solids through the trap pretty well. Unfortunately when they did clog it was a big mess because 5gal was more than what the bowl holds so water could easily go over the rim.

At some point in US history they passed a law that all toilets sold had to be low volume flushes, 1.6gal or less and at first most of them were awful flushers they could only flush a small amount of solids and they didn't have enough water moving by the surfaces that got smeared to clean them well so after every flush they kind of needed a toilet brush.

But manufacturers got better at understanding hydrodynamics and started manipulating the speed and direction of the water as it was delivered into the bowl to start the flush, also I forget the name of this science but also the coatings on the porcylin have come a long way towards keeping solids from sticking to them.

Now days toilets from reputable brands like American standard, toto, Kohler, etc in their cheapest lines flush extremely well and stay clean too. Some of them are way way better flushers than the old 5gal ones were.

Not the nicest looking toilet but American standard I think it's champion 4. It's something 4. I have had 3 of them for about 4 years now and in that time had not a single clog. They have a promotional video dumping 12 golf balls down it and flushing them.

I've had good luck this the Lowe's $99 toilet (Henshaw White WaterSense Elongated Chair Height 2-Piece Toilet 12-in Rough-In Size https://www.lowes.com/pd/Henshaw-...1000340935). What's the benefit to these (slightly) more expensive toilets? Is it worth spending the extra money? Why?

No clue what you have a picture of but none of the toilets linked match it. The large base in your picture is not what I see when I click the link.

What's a comparable toilet to the Toto Drake when I only care about 2 things:

1) Reliability, I don't want anything to break or leak.
2) Easy to clean.

Slightly? But +1 on the Lowes toilettos; 17" feels like a true throne, NTM excellent acoustics laugh out loud.

No way I'm paying double, plus HD social policies are a negative compared to Lowes IMO.

A 3 inch flush valve toilet will do just fine for the average person but if I were to do it again I'd go with a 4 inch flush valve toilet, for high traffic, high use toilets, if you know what I mean.

That's why they make the soft toilet seats.

And a plumber on speed dial. You should take this into consideration with the price of low flow toilets. Or redo the sewer plumbing, to make it it has a straight shot down the main line.

Good luck finding parts for the 4 inch valve.
