Decent price for a nine-speed bike with double wall rims and stainless spokes. It would be a good starter bike for somebody to find out if they like mountain biking.
Or, ideally, borrow from friends a mountain bike, find that you really like the sport, and then spend a bit more than this pricepoint for a bike that will be a bit lighter and with nicer parts.
Thumbs up to this deal.

I have the bike and have upgraded every single component with parts that suits me and when they go on sale. NO REGRETS and would have spent 3k+ on a bike with similar components I have now. I saved money on the long run and I learned many new skills in the process.

This bike in stock form is good for intermediate trails. The suspension is heavier as expected at this pricepoint and the wheels although not light will take a beating. The manual brakes are expected and one of the first items I upgraded.

If you but this bike, take it straight to a reputable bike shop for fine adjustments before taking it offroad as the department store technician will do a mediocre job at best.

The frame is awesome and is the only original part on my bike. I'm heavy and it has taken a beating. Latly, it has internal routing for a seatpost although the store description may not mention it.

Nit pick but this is a 2x9 (18 speed).

Can somebody tell the specs on the fork? Does it have a lockout? This seems more in line with the Dick's Avalanche deal, but this is better, right? I definitely prefer the 2x drivetrain to the 3x on the Avalanche. Plus 27" vs 29" and wider 2.8" tires. Tempting.

EDIT: The Google indicates there no lockout on this fork. Pass.

Apparently this is the same bike as Dick's Ricochet, same thing but branded/labeled for Dicks. Right now it's $599 at Dicks but I'll be looking out for this to go on sale soon, as the end of the season is upon us.

Price is now $439 with free ship to store, but it's a bit misleading because of a $70 "oversize handling fee."

Too many house brand parts, entry level drive, cheepo tires, entry level brakes..pass. Numerous Bikes Direct bikes kill this one.

Good luck trying to actually use that website. Looks like something from 1995. I mean holy cow, look at this thing:
