What's the performance of this versus the Dewalt hammer drill they have in Home Depot for about $100?

$11 shipping for me.

Rakuten has the same thing for $33.08 (after coupon code SAVE15) and free shipping if someone has points to burn there
Hitachi DV16VSS [rakuten.com]

edit: the rakuten one is sold by CPO outlets and it is also refurb but no grade given

If buying from CPO, there's a lower price on their fleaBay store, $31.06 [ebay.com] w/ FS, tax for some:

  • $36.98
  • -$5.55 coupon PRESUMMER 15% off
  • -$0.37 eBay Bucks

Or $28.55 [ebay.com] from the lowest-priced seller. (OP, please feel free to update your post with either of these.)

5.4 amps doesn't seem like enough but the brand speaks for itself. Little concerned there are so many refurbs on the market.

EDIT
Bogus eBay 15% doesn't apply to the second link, which makes that price $33.66.

I bought this several years ago for this price via slickdeals. For the price it works alright. I ended up buying a Bosch bulldog or whatever its called to drill 1/2"x18" holes to treat for termites. This one wouldn't have been powerful enough for that. I did use this to predrill 4-5" holes for concrete screws and it worked great.

I'm no expert, but a hammer drill that is rated at 5.4 amps is either incredibly efficient or undoubtedly underpowered, my money being on the latter.

Nothing to compare to but I bought this for about $26 shipped and it seems worth the money. It came with a case in almost new condition. I used it today with an auger bit to drill through railroad ties. The bit got stuck, my fault, and the drill did start smoking when I tried to dislodge it but it still works. I ended up cutting the bit with an angle grinder and leaving it.

I know I'm not there working on this with you but this seems like the wrong tool for the job.

Got a Bosch version from Home Depot for about $160. Piece of cr*@p. It started smoking and melted the housing around the bearings after only few uses. Had a cheap Makita version that lasted decades until it got stolen. Old-school Makita = bullet proof.

I've seen this deal a few times, and it scares me that they have so many reconditioned drills to sell, I wonder what the fault rate is on these things.

Again i'm not there so I'm not trying to be critical but typically a hammer drill is used pretty exclusively for masonry type surfaces.
