They're both the same (except color), the only difference is the droid noises they make via the app. And... the noises come from the app, ie- your phone. I have all of them because I'm a Star Wars nut, and these are great..... but I do wish they actually had sound emit from the droid itself, not the app.
From the R2 product description: "Artoo's signature front and rear LED lights are fully functional, and an integrated speaker means the beeps and boops come right from R2-D2 itself."

Is that info wrong?

EDIT: ah, you're probably referring just to the BB units

Yes the R2s have a built in speaker, the BBs do not (noise comes from the app)

If you're not someone who keep relatively current on your smartphones or tablets, make sure to check what version of Android or iOS you need for these. My son was given a BB8 for Christmas in 2017 and we quickly realized we didn't own anything that could communicate with it except for one phone (that was inconveniently being used as a phone). Communication is by bluetooth but you have to have a relatively recent version of the smartphone or tablet OS in order to run the Sphero app. The non-StarWars-specific app may be slightly more permissive but it might not give you all the controls you want.

Just an FYI, but app support will cease to exist and most likely the app will be pulled from all app stores in about a year and a half:

https://www.macrumors.com/2018/12...-products/

Kind of sucks they don't make a normal controller for this thing.
Thank you for this - just saved me $40.

My experience is the R2D2 is a piece of junk and every published review is a shill.
One example. It doesn't work even on the lowest pile of carpet. Ok..so the manufacturer doesn't explicitly state it does or doesn't but R2 literally has an emote which is designed to simply make him fall over. Hearing him crunch on the hard wood floor every time that was used was painful...don't want a toy designed to destroy itself.
Also even on hard floor his tracks and motors get so much dirt and hair in them and there is no way to easily clean it out.
I got him for like $35 over BF and that included the force band. So not worth it and off loaded it as soon as I could.
True it is probably the most life life R2 you can buy but that doesnt make up for its huge design flaws for anyone but a mega fan boy/girl.
I would stick with the BB8 I think, even though the head will constantly fall off.

Pls dont buy these pls. I have R2D2 and BB 9E and we played with them for like an hour. Collecting dust now and will become a collectible. Not worth it.

Yeah, just the BB units. I want to pick up the R2 one sometime just because of the sound being built-in, but I'll wait for a magic $20. I have about 30 different R2 collectibles anyways lol.
