Wow, only a few posts in and people are talking about the free* multimeter from Harbor Freight, which is like a cheap child's toy compared to this decently acceptable quality one from Sears. I can guarantee that if you had both in your tool box, the Craftsman is the one that you would be reaching for.

The $10 item is the meter only. The $20 item is the same meter plus a non-contact voltage detector (NCV), which is commonly used to test for 60Hz AC voltage in household wiring before touching it (makes sure you tripped the right circuit breaker off before touching the wires).

Nice deal. I picked up the 82140, almost identical to this one, years ago for $15 and have had no complaints. The original 9v batt in it lasted probably 4 years and I just recently had to replace it.

They don't show it in the pic, but the soft shell around it (on mine at least) has a flip out stand to hold it up which comes in handy.

Obligatory harbor freight free multimeter coupon at hfqdb online

They do most of what these do. No, not the same quality but free is free. I've been using them for years with great results.

Right now I've been sending everyone to get them so they can figure out if their battery or alternator is dead.

Cheapest item to buy is usually box cutter/razor blade for $0.25-0.50 after coupon.

Or just get one for free with any purchase at Harbor Freight: https://www.hfqpdb.com/best_coupo...MULTIMETER
Grab some batteries for 99c or Teflon tape for 89c and get the multimeter free. This one only goes up to 250VAC/VDC and 5A, but will still work for most folks just fine.
I've had two from HF. Neither one is dependable enough to just check simple DC battery voltage. If I jiggle the selector enough times, it may work. I certainly wouldn't depend on it for AC current, or any high voltage. But, I'd rather have one that works, when I need it. Some day, HF could face a lawsuit over these defective meters.
