Maybe a dumb question, but I see several people here who have PS+ extended out a while.

Is there a reason to do that? Seems that it'd be better to hang on to the code in case you w
anted to (needed to) hawk it later on. The codes don't expire do they?
While i dont believe code expires, always risk it goes dead. And if it goes dead a year after purchase, no recourse...

if physical card, I'd be more tempted to follow your suggestion but with digital purchase... not so much.

the price of ps+ 1 year subscription seems to be going down. it's regularly at $40 now seems like every week, and some times below $40 like this one. Maybe by black friday it'll be at $30? they did go from 6 games to 2 so they should charge less.
It would be nice if they charged less, and anything is possible... but I highly doubt it will happen. Prices almost always go up...

Of course it will...this is effectively a way for Sony to double the price of the console on you. $400 for the console at launch and another $400 for this overpriced service over the life of said console.
While I agree, it was our own fault, to say the least.
Back when the PS3 first came out in '06, people complained about how overpriced it was at $600 while the xbox 360 was less (even though the PSN was a free service while Xbox had you pay for Live service.)
When the PS4 came out, they adopted the pay-for-service model and sold the PS4 consoles at a loss, eventually recouping the loss through the service.
If the PS5, with all the architecture it's said to have, releases at it's full price of possibly more than $800-$1000 or even higher, there will be countless people who will complain once again, and Playstation will lose millions of sales to ignorant people that see the price of a ps5 and then the price of an xbox 4 or the Stradia, and they will go with the one that costs less just because.
So, you can't place all the blame on them.

Don't blame me! I'd be more than willing to pay $600 for a baller console (assuming the games were there...don't even get me started on anemic the PS4 library). But I don't like being fleeced month after month, year after year for a subscription service that ultimately leaves me with nothing to show for my money.

Just remember if you buy them to use later. They might cancel the code in year or two and you can reach out to Costco customer service to get new codes but I found out the hard way when I purchased three of these to use after my son was born (figured I wouldn't really be able to use it properly)

Is this even taxable?
Yes because it isn't a form of payment, i.e. it is not a gift card as some claim it to be. It's a consumer product or service no different then buying a digital movie or sub on your favorite streaming service that charges you tax. Yes even streaming services like Netflix charge tax.
