I have had this light for a while, really nice for a starter 'nice' flashlight.

If you Reddit, check out the flashlight sub. There's a great sticky that breaks down the best batteries. I'd list some but I don't actually know or own any yet.

"What is the Difference Between "Protected" and "Unprotected" 18650 Batteries"

In a nutshell, protected ones are less likely to overheat or overcharge.

Samsung 30Q's seem to be the ubiquitous choice. Please make sure to select button-top version. The P12 incorporates a reverse-polarity protective ring around the anode that prevents flat-top batteries from working.

However, the P12 has no low-voltage cutoff, so you might be advised to purchase protected cells. The best choice for protected 18650's is a little bit more muddied. Personally, I'd be comfortable with any of the choices Richard offers at his Mountain Electronics website.

If you'd like to do your own comparison shopping, here's a couple of references. HKJ (lygte) is the resident battery expert at various flashlight forums. Mooch is the accepted battery expert in the ecig forums.

If you really want the best for your flashlight, I'd say get a protected Panasonic (eg. Panasonic HIXON NCR18650B 3400mAh). I'd suggest to stay away from brand names like "sureFire", "ultraFire", "Scaling", "Keeppower"... or any other no-name brand that is advertising over 3200mAh...
Sure, LG, Samsung should be ok as well.

Protected mean the battery has an internal electronic board that will protect against overcharge, short circuit, over discharge, high temperature...
If you use an unprotected 18650 with your flashlight, make sure you do not let it discharge under 3.2V!

Actually Surefire is a legit flasglight company based out of Fountain Valley, CA. Their stuff is good. Not sure if they sell 18650 batteries though.
The rest of the "fires" is what you need to be weary of.
Also protected cells used to mean that there was a small circuit board on the flashlight itself that cut off power at the low and high end. Also took care of short circuit and reverse charging protection.
