Then get neither and find yourself a computer that costs less and weighs less.

Sounds silly but I don't reccomend getting a pc like this for school even if you game. I have ethe older model and the weigh t and poor battery life just doesn't make it worth it to lug around.

After reading some reviews, this comes with a dell-specific maxQ design that is about 10% slower than average 1060, and doesn't support standard drivers. Reviews say you have to get your drivers directly from Dell, and they're slow with updates. I'll pass on that action.

That is not true at all. It does support driver directly from Nvidia. And that 10% reduction in performance from a standard GTX 1060 is actually better than other Max-Q versions of the GTX 1060.

I don't know but maybe a $200 chromebook can do excel through the playstore. Word should be fine. But if you need more horsepower then find something as good or better then the link below.
https://slickdeals.net/f/13087708-acer-swift-3-laptop-i7-8550u-15-6-1080p-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-550-free-shipping?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo

For around $500 you should be aiming for 8550u or 8250u, ssd, 8 gb ram, 1080 ips for view angle. That's about it I think lol.
You really shouldn't spend more than $500 for a 8205u or $550 for a 8550u. From reddit I read i7 and i5 are just marketing and you shouldn't buy based on just the name alone. Just reddit any questions you have.

If you later want a kickass gaming laptop then find something like this or better in this link.

I completely didn't read everything and saw you said 16gb ram so disregard the $500 laptops.
