Can you recommend any laptop less than 1k which can do some 4k video editing. Mostly need for 1080p but 4k would be nice and being portable is also another plus!
You may not be getting a high quality panel at this price. Look for the below deal:-

How 16gb of RAM can be used or why people have it on the 'must have' list?

So does it come with Microsoft word, or do you have to buy that separately?

New Ryzen is not coming to any Ultrabooks. But if you are waiting for the Ryzen 3000 series APU, they are already in market and there are tons of deals posted in last month.
is flex 14 an ultrabook? i thought more like slim laptop. like inspiron. i'm not sure if it's 3000 i want or newer that's significantly faster. i think also released in june. maybe later. i don't know anymore. confused.

Ye, it is an Ultrabook and 2-in-1. But anyway, the Ryzen 3 best processors, they won't be coming to any laptops now. AMD has four SKUs based on the Zen+ 12 mm architecture (same as desktop 2000 series Ryzen) and they are already available. two of them are U series 15W TDP processors, Ryzen 5 3500U and Ryzen 7 3700U and other two are for budget gaming Laptops with 35W TDP, namely Ryzen 5 3550H and Ryzen 7 3750H.

Laptops and ultrabooks based on the 3000 series APU are already available and in fact Lenovo Flex 14 has a model which went popular couple of weeks back. Check in Amazon for the model with Ryzen 5 3500U, 8GB Ram, 256GB SSD around $529

Anyone done returns with Lenovo? The rep I spoke with said 30 days full refund. Is that true? Most seem to have some fees added. I am worried about the dim screen some reviews have complained about. Anyone that purchased this when it was on sale last month, how is the screen? I like to watch movies on my laptop regularly.

My 13-yr old is really into coding and he wants his own laptop for it. This a good choice? Would the 14-in screen be a detriment?

It is a great choice for coding and 14" display is actually best for portability and screen estate. It is not as big as a 15.6" model and hence provide you you better portability but not small as a 13.3" or 12.6" models which can cause some discomfort while having multiple applications open.

To all who are buying this for School or college, get the Lenovo Active Pen as well which will make this a superb Note taking and drawing machine. Lenovo Active Pen 1 with 2048 Pressure sensitivity costs around $20 and the Active Pen 2 with 4096 level of Pressure sensitivity costs just around $36. Pen 1 is fine for Note taking and moderate drawing and art work. But if you are serious about art work then Pen 2 is a better choice. Below are the links: -
Active Pen 1 ($19.99):

Active Pen 2 ($34.99)
