Didn't know tamron owns zeiss, thank you for the info.

Also Sony owns Canon and Nikon owns Sony. Now Fuji bought Nikon and sold it back to Sony

ntzx has a great point tho.

theres aboslutely no reason to get batis 85 over FE85. unless u just got money to burn and dont give a crap. with the 25mm again, theres just no contest between this and the 24GM. if you're spending this much already on a wide, go for 24GM. if not, get a FE28 and call it a day.

obvious FL difference aside, FE28 is smaller and lighter, with better bokeh, sharpness is a toss stopped down. barrel distortion and vignetting is also bad on both. CA is horrendous on the FE28 but thats probably the least of anyones concern.

no merit for these batis lenses

Simplification that ignores that the lens are different... no matter the lens holder.

And to the 85mm... weight, diameter, length, elements, groups all are diff. This is why don't promote rumors without facts. Zeiss did not re-label Tamron production model 85mm. They are totally diff lenses.
Absolutely. Shot both and strongly prefer the Sony to the Zeiss

But this is now $500 diff vs the 24mm gm (use to be $100 diff, then its a no brainer to get the GM)

Batis beats the Sony in some ways and has better coatings and flare performance imho. It justifies its price, but the issue becomes that most people won't need the performance boost, vs the excellent and much cheaper Sony, and most who can or will pay more, will get the much better G Master

If it's just one lens I will shut my mouth. But this happens to all Batis lenses and Zeiss is just outsourcing their works and rips off people by labeling the lens with the little blue logo. If you like Zeiss, go buy Loxia, they are pure Zeiss.
So the Zeiss lens is technically not outsourced as Sony and Zeiss has a partnership. Sony owns part of Tamron so that's how this lens was made by a Tamron employee. The design elements are different from what Tamron uses and so are the glass. In this batis I'm not 100% sure if it is Zeiss glass or Sony glass but if this was made in a Tamron factory designed by a Tamron employee I would say it's a Sony glass in there. It's not a rebadge or anything like that but rather it is a collaboration work.

Here is the link to the patent of this lens. https://ipforce.jp/patent-jp-A-2015-121649
The inventor is 坂井 隆彦 who is a totally Tamron employee. Basically, all Batis lenses are designed by Tamron, made in Japan, and labeled as Zeiss. Also, fun fact, Batis 85mm is basically exactly the same as FE 85 + OIS + Weather sealing.
Thanks for the info. Instantly purchased my 85FE on eBay. Haha

Here is a Chinese lens rental company's test. https://post.smzdm.com/p/560705/
The Batis added one group for OIS but the resolution is affected, as well as the vignette. So for most, FE 85 has better performance.
