Is 18v model better than 40v? I read bad reviews with 40v.

I really like my 18v Ryobi tools, but I bought this set last year and they are both duds. The string trimmer is underpowered and a few minutes of use on the first one I had resulted in smoke as it cooked itself. The blower was also lacking in power and wasn't particularly good for anything but blowing some cut grass off smooth concrete. Maybe if you have a small yard full of some kind of weak little pansy grass this might be OK. Big Grin

The 18V yard tools are worthless. I've got the whole 40V line of yard equipment and they're comparable to gas. Not as powerful, but they're fine if you have a smaller lot (<1/4 acre).

I have a 1/4 acre yard and I currently plan on buying the 40v 20in self push mower ($279) and the 18v Brushless Blower and trimmer w/ 4ah kit ($149).

Should this combo do the job or should I upgrade the blower/trimmer to 40v?

I bought this set last year and was disappointed. I can only describe these as weeny. They are like toys.

debating...need this combo tool but unsure on battery..I guess I will wait it out .
Purchased it last year. Battery charges quick. Last we about a total of 30-40 minutes of trimming or leave blowing

How about this one?

I have used the combo you referenced for about 3 years now. The blower is much better than the one in the op's deal. Does the job for grass. It's not going to blow a huge pile of leaves around. I also like the edging feature on this trimmer. Both work great for my 1/4 acre. It's probably quite a bit weaker than the 40v but I have quite a collection of 18v tools/batteries so this works for me.

man. i forgot they included that damn charger with this kit. how cheap of them. for me it was a wash though, because i already had the real charger and this one is nice to toss in my kit when i travel, assuming i have enough battery power to get me through the jobs, but this thing is along just in case.

yes. definitely too small of a battery to do anything more than a smallish yard. imo tho, this is a decent battery for other tools... so you could always pick this up and then get another tool pack with a more appropriately sized battery.
So... you might say the 'low-capacity/low-runtime battery & slow charger' is sort of like the 'teaser/starter toner/ink cartridge' that's almost always part of a brand new printer?

I use this blower for light sweep on far areas. Not enough power to blow heavy leaves and grass clippings.

I have a love/hate relationship with these string trimmers(more hate I think.) My last one died a few seasons back. Tired of trimming in manually. Time to give it another go. Just bite the bullet & ordered a set. I rather wish it these deals didn't always seem to the bunch in a blower though. I already got two of those lying around.

This P2034 kit consists of the Ryobi P2003 string trimmer and P2102 blower/sweeper, both the weakest tool in the Ryobi 18V lineup. For the trimmer: only 10" cut width (vs. 12+" for higher end ones), fixed shaft and handle (no telescoping shaft or adjustable handle angle, but shaft does rotate for edging). For the blower/sweeper: only 120 mph / 120 cfm (the higher end blowers I have is 150 / 200, while two jet blowers I know of are 90 / 200 and 100 / 280). The ancient P105 2.6Ah battery is rather weak for an extended battery, and just like the compact P102 1.3Ah, it is not Lithium+ (it uses crap cells instead of first tier brands like LG Samsung Sony Sanyo/Panasonic etc) so runtime and reliability is not as good as the green Lithium+ batteries especially with high drain applications. But that's what you get with $79 for this 2 tool kit and it is unfortunate that this kit exists (some even cheaper Ryobi kits come with the even weaker P102 1.3Ah battery which gives me shivers).

This exact kit was $60 during 2016 Independence Day sale (6/20-7/5) and $69 on few occasions in 2018. I have noticed that other power and outdoor tools sale prices have gone up at HD too lately.

The next step up (and I'd say the cheapest acceptable Ryobi kit for small/urban yards) is the P2035 kit that sold for $109 a few times in 2018 and is $129-149 so far this year. It comes with the well regarded 4Ah battery.
