Once something like this is purchased, is it expensive to keep running? For example, I want to print out a replacement GameCube shell. How much would it cost just to print it once I have this thing? I'm very interested at this price.

It depends on the filament you use and the design of the shell. You can get rolls of good filament on Amazon (3d Solutech PLA) for $15-$20 per KG (35.274oz). So Take a 14 oz Game Cube Controller (this includes guts) you could almost print 3. There are exotic filament and more expensive options but I don't think the cost of ownership is that high.

It's going to be expensive because it'll turn into a hobby on its own. That said a roll of filament is under $20 and lasts quite a while.

think hobby/tinkering, not plug and play... if you're not into it, you'll hate it every second. you'll spend a fair amount of time learning and tweaking before you get to the point of printing your GameCube shell, and if that's your only real goal, it's not worth it.
that said, i own one, fantastic printer i use it rather often for projects and whatnot. but i have lots of silly hobbies and projects, so it comes in handy being able to make my own components and project boxes exactly how i want them.
