I've commented a half dozen times on here before when this tool has popped up. This is a great drill. Tons of power. Watch your fingers - it'll bite you if the bit stops suddenly. Price is decent here, even better with the coupon. If I had to choose between an impact or a drill, I'd choose this and get the best of both. Oh one other thing to mention. The light on this model is impressively bright. Additionally you can set it to be at different powers/lengths of time after trigger pull.

You'd be served just fine by any of the regulars. Dewalt, Ridgid, Bosch, Milwaukee, etc. There's always somebody in these threads that builds houses for a living thinking the guy putting up gutters and drilling a few holes a year is going to wear his tools like a tradesman and suggests outrageously expensive tools.

I don't think any drill can replace the awesomeness of an impact driver. I use my impact driver way more than my drill, way lighter and more powerful.

Impact is certainly better for driving screws. The bit stays seated in the screw head better since there are very small pauses in driving that allows the bit to reseat into the screw head.

It also won't twist your arm off on lag screws.

Are hammerdrills only to drill through cement, mortar, and brick? I want to drill through steel so attach a latch. Would this work? Thanks

A hammer drill's hammering action is only for stone etc, yes. You would not want to engage hammer on steel. But the hammer can be turned off, leaving you with a very powerful conventional drill.

Do remember that a bit of oil to help lubricate the drill bit through metal will do a lot for the hole quality, though. Just a droplet or two.

I own the 996 and current gen Milwaukee Fuel hammer drill. The Milwaukee is lighter and has a smaller for factor. The DeWalt 996 feels more powerful. It has more blows per minute on hammer drill too. I have melted the top of masonry bits without overheating the motor. I have even mixed full 5 gallon buckets of tile adhesive with it, not an easy task for any cordless drill. Have not found a task on a job site it couldn't handle. The drill is a beast, I would recommend it to anyone.

Awesome drill... bought it last time it was on slickdeals... recently used it to put tapcons on a cement wall, the hammer function cut through the cement wall like butter!

I agree. Have used the impact when the drill binds up
