Get a Wyze cam for 25$ it'll give you free cloud storage for a week before they purge files - they are only 12 second clips when motion sensors are activated tho FYI . You can download those files, but also you keep local storage on sd card in device to capture running video all the time, or motion sensor capture for longer than 12 secs. It just won't be available in the cloud.
I have the motion sensor pack for 20$ more than I set up at the base of my porch so as soon as someone trips it it causes my cam to record and send alert to phone. It has no actual "doorbell" but I'm notified there is someone there and have video to view them in small clips auto generated or just live. Also has two way audio for talking to people. Great value, I'm sure the ring is better in most aspects but it wasn't convincing me it's worth 1-200$ plus monthly fees.
You don't need the motion sensor pack to make this record at your doorstep, I just did it to jumpstart my camera into recording before the camera actually sees movement as this cam and every other one on the market can have some lag between notifications. The motion sensor definitely improves operation tho.

The cloud service costs $2.50 a month. I value my time a lot more than $2.50 a month and this is probably one of the easiest headache free solutions out there. Any other solution is going to cost you just as much as a ring even including the subscription. If you can get over the mental hurdle of having a subscription then this is very cost effective.

Other good deals out there like at Costco when it goes on sale since that includes the monitoring, but this is good too.

Seems like a great deal even though it's a refurb.

Don't these need the paid monitor service to retain your video?

Not sure I can speak to that as I have a Ring pro doorbell and battery powered spotlight cam. They are a bit slow to respond at times, but otherwise pretty happy.

Is there a way to save the video or get some sort of screen shot if you don't subscribe to their service

Requires doorbell wiring. I really dont get why they didn't give a rechargeable battery option with this. Other than size

You answered your own question. The battery one is much larger.
