Hard wiring can kill your car battery in a couple of days if there is a lot of movement it senses, such as rain or trees in the wind.

I use this OBD unit to connect it to a robust power bank for extended periods or to toggle on/off extended recording while out and about: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...le_o09_s00
The tap kit I linked has voltage detection so it won't actually kill your battery. Your solution would work fine for people in colder climates, but keep in mind many people are buying this model because it uses capacitors instead of battery power. Using a battery bank leaves your system depending on a battery operating nonstop, negating the benefit of the capacitors. Even in New England, a summer day can see car interiors spike over 120 degrees. I wouldn't trust a battery bank to operate continuously in those circumstances.

4K is not 4K. It is interpolated up from 1040p.
This statement is unclear.

Which model? Are you referring to DR02J? The image sensor there is the AR0521 which has a pixel array of 2592 (H) x 1944, or 4K.

What is 1040p?

In 2019 they can't make microusb or usbc 60fps cams. Same shit every year only increase price and give bs codes

Can someone with a lot of experience with these or who has done a lot of research provide a recommendation on which one of these models is the best value for what it provides, or has the features that one might need? My wife and I are looking to invest in them for the first time. Thanks!

In hotter climates go with a cam that has a capacitor.

As far as what's best, depends on what you're looking for. The A119 series seem to be highly rated bang for the buck. My A119 V2 has been great for the last 10ish months. Hasn't died in the Florida heat yet. I run it 4-24 hours a day. Even works with 256 GB micro sdhc cards now too. I'm waiting for them to officially support a higher capacity than that, hopefully that happens or maybe the V3 will?

Are car batteries that small now a days that killing them with a dashcam is a real issue? I know hooked up to a battery pack my A119 would last about 34 hours over 2 days before I bothered to charge them (one 25k the other 26.8k mAh). I understand that there are other draws on the battery but still, so small.

Definitely the supercapacitor one. Stay away from battery if you're in real hot climates
Yes, I second using the capacitor ones. I live in Las Vegas. My capacitor dashcam has lasted 3 years in 115 degree weather so far.

As someone who has been rear-ended 3 times, including 1 hit and run, I will never have just a forward-facing unit, no matter the resolution.

Here are examples of imaging from my DR-02D dual unit...

I also have the $20 GPS plug-in that adds location data seen at the bottom of the screen.

Dashcamtalk is the good source of information.

I have the A119. However, keep your expectation realistic. It's not going to get a license plate at night. A friend almost got ran off the road one time and the video wasn't good enough to use to id the car.

I wonder how much $ one need to spend for something that can actually get good quality video at night?

Hardwire it to the cigarette lighter with an add a fuse and you'll be fine. Turns off with the car and it takes about 3-5 seconds to turn on and start recording when you turn the car on.

But doing that, you can't toggle it on to leave it recording in a parking lot.

Go to you vehicle forum and search for how to hard wire your dash cam into the fuse box. Leaves your cig adapter free and it looks clean with no wires hanging.
Rear View Mirror Mount for G1W,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KM9A...b_ap_share
And this instead of the suction cup. Looks better.

This camera does not support buffered recording during parking mode, only impact protection. And hardwire kits shut the camera off once a certain voltage is reached. I've used hardwire kits in all of my cars without issue.
