I'm not talking about general consumer or headphone type connectors and no its not pointless. A low mating cycle rated connector allows for repair of a system or assembly but isn't made to be swapped regularly. Sure these types of connectors are specialized and very rare but they do exist is my point. Think of a laptop ribbon cable connector for the screen or keyboard. Likely at most the keyboard or screen may be replaced a few times over the life of a product and the connector needs to be high density, slim etc. Its difficult to make something high density and slim while having a mating cycle life of thousands of cycles so the connector typically ends up being rated for enough cycles to build the laptop and repair it a few times.

All connectors have a finite life cycle rating, as an electrical engineer its one of the primary things we analyze when selecting a connector. I have selected and released parts for consumer devices as well as more specialized equipment to be run in a clinical lab.

Different products have different requirements. Something like a headphone connector is like a tire. Some users drive hundreds of miles a day, some may only drive hundreds of miles per year.

If I were an engineer at Westone my first thought is that this product you should select a small 50-100 KHz rated connector with a mating life cycle high enough to withstand someone replacing their cable maybe a couple of times per month. Even this is excessive and you have to ask why a person is pulling the cable off so often. Its someone who doesn't understand engineering or technical details and who thinks every electronic or mechanical device should be magical and not have to obey the laws of physics. Its the type or person who bends and flexes the crap out of their cable, swings their headphones around by the cable, unplugs their devices by pulling on the cable and not the connector body. These are the nightmare customers for an engineer. The type of person who shouldn't be allowed to touch expensive devices. A little common sense with how you treat your devices goes a long way in them lasting a long time.

I googled it. I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable will correct me, but it seems to mean that you can only plug in/unplug the headphones 500 times before you should expect them to fail. Hopefully I'm just terribly misunderstood, because that seems nuts for a lot of use cases.

To anyone getting these just be aware the pairing rating for the MMCX connection is 500. So you cannot be disconnecting and reconnecting the cable regularly.

I recommend the W40, it's significantly better than the W30 (not that the W30 is bad). Last time it was $200 on Adorama just have to wait.

I wouldn't say significantly better though... but w40 @ $200 was a steal

Is it worth upgrading? I've had my w30s for the few years now and they've been amazing so far.
