Consumer Reports posts appliance reliability ratings publicly

I noticed there's been a bunch of appliance deals here on SD recently, and I noticed on all of them people are wondering about how reliable the stuff is. Then there's always a ton of comments from users with vague anecdotes saying Brand A is great, how they had issues with something and a repair technician said Brand B is better, they've had the same Brand C washer for 30 years, how all the new models out today must be crap, etc, etc.

Today Consumer Reports has posted the majority of their appliance reliability ratings in an article which is free to read without a subscription. They have over 381,000 data points, which is a lot better than 1 person complaining on the internet. You can even see the difference in reliability between types of appliances like a top and front-loading washer when you mouseover. Typically CR says to avoid stuff rated orange (Fair) or red (Poor). While it doesn't show how well an appliance will clean/cook/dry or whatever, at least now you have a reference to look at before you buy that lemon Samsung dishwasher.

I'm aware this isn't a "deal" but it doesn't really fit into any of the other categories and it's not a user review of a product so it doesn't go in Product Reviews either. Hopefully people here find this useful whenever another appliance deal comes around.

Bosch is the best dishwasher IMO.

Most expensive doesn't mean quality.

LG seems to be far better than I expected and Samsung the exact opposite.

Ouch. Just finished a kitchen with Samsung. I have so many of their products that I've never been disappointed by so far.

Oddly enough I do not see the key there:

Hopefully, you've got a good lot of machines. Samsung, unfortunately, missed the mark with their appliances division in terms of reliability and is further hampered by their terrible warranty/service people.

My Samsung dishwasher had a fan go bad in the first 3 months so all you heard was a loud pitched whine anytime it was exhausting the steam out (seemed like a regular computer fan). Repair guy says it's expected and a replacement wouldn't last (which it didn't). Another month later, the new fan failed and he asked me if I wanted a better solution:-> paperclip into the fan slot so it doesn't spin/whine anymore). Almost everyone I've talked to regarding appliances said the same thing regarding quality. A friend of mine spent 2k on a fridge, failed in 18 months, and the repair guy told her, what did you expect, it's Samsung. All anecdotal I know, and I'm sure your machines are fine, but now you know (for the future).

Ouch - the Asko dishwasher that came with my house, with which I've never had an issue or complaint and is mega-quiet, is very near the bottom of the list Frown

Interestingly, the Samsung Stovetop ties with Bosch in outperforming all the others but the Fridge and Microwaves really drag it down.

Just an FYI - My local library allows members access to Consumer Reports Magazine online from Home, including all reviews and reports. Maybe yours does too! (membership to the library is free of course)
