The 12 month membership gets you access to the online service for games like Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros and the upcoming Super Mario Maker 2. It essentially lets you play against other people online.
One perk is the retro games library which allows you to play a selection of older games on the switch (mostly games from the 90's and early 00's).
If your kids nintendo switch games they would have to buy them a-la-cart as you mentioned. There are plenty of sales going around for switch games that you can look up online.

I've seen switch for $250 many times, and a free game will be easy on BF.

Problem is, i only buy Nintendo exclusives on switch and I haven't seen any games I want lately. Was hoping for Metroid prime 4 but that's not coming out for a long time. BOTW2 is still a ways off. I don't like Mario tennis or the kids games like yoshi. Might pick up links awakening, but it's not worth full price.

Sorry for the noob question, I don't own any gaming console so I'm clueless. My 6 & 8 y.o kiddos have been asking for something similar (they get to play on the old Wii game for 5 minutes at daycare, then have to wait and taking turns with other kids). Does the 12-month membership get me most of the kids game or do I have to buy them a-la-cart?

eta: found my answer i think, no game included

What's included in the online service?
Nintendo Switch Online is a paid online membership that allows access to additional Nintendo Switch system features, including online play, save data cloud backup, and an ever-growing list of NES™ games with added online play. Nintendo Switch Online members also gain access to exclusive special offers, like in-game gear and physical products.

Which brings me to the next question, where can you get games that's less than retail prices? LMAO

I think I'd expect something more like $300 for a Switch with 2 games or $350 for a Switch with 3. Like a Mario, Mario Kart, and Mario Party mix. They want the cash and are willing to part by increasing their sales numbers.

All remakes and not a lot of exclusives coming to the switch to justify a mobile device that has worse specs than an average android phone. Will hit $200 by christmas.
Idiotconsumer if you don't like the system that's fine you don't have to bash it.The Switch to me has more exclusives then the Xbox one and PS4 and that's the main reason I haven't touched my Xbox in over a year because it has the lease amount of exclusives so what good is all that power if it isn't being utilized that's what a laptop is for.
