Old Garage Door Opener Hack or FrankenOpener Project Idea's (Re-purpose 2 Replaced Garage Door Openers)

Hey there!

I just swapped out our 2 garage door openers this weekend due to State Building code changes.
California SB-969
Openers need a battery backup in case of power outage during a fire, etc...

In a couple of weeks I'm replacing my windows and when the inspector comes out to check, they check to make sure your house is all up to code and will ding me on the openers as currently it's a HOT issue. Permit or no Permit? There is a Rebate on windows from the city, so they will not pay the rebate if I don't have a permit.

So....I now have 2 openers that are in pretty good shape that would wind up in the landfill.

I'd like to do something cool/fun/interesting/ with them vs. toss them into the bin.

I've done some searching thus far and a dumb waiter was all I could find for an idea.

So what would you build to re-use a garage door opener or two??

We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?

Why not just resell them on Ebay\CL assuming they have a little value? That or donate them to some charity for a write off (assuming you could get them to take it).

It doesn't stop there.
DW gets in car, starts it and then calls me to tell me the garage door won't open.

As far a battery backup. That's why the doors are balanced....sigh

We have a Habitat store less than a mile from my house that I could donate them to...but that's not the point.

I'd like to do some weird science/cool check this out kind of project with them.
If my floor plan was a bit different, I'd consider the dumb waiter idea bulb

I doubt it for much anything practicle. Other than opening a door or lifting something as sort of a poor man's hoist, I really can't see much use for the thing if it is the standard fair garage door opener. Even if you could utilize it for something like a dumb waiter, it would likely not be the best or proper way of constructing such a thing in the home.

Now if you wanted to do something a little crazy you probably could do something like a telescoping flag pole on a timer that raises the pole in the morning and brings it down at night lol.

I've got a neighbor that habitually starts their car inside their garage before they open the garage door. They also have a half broken garage door that sometimes gets stuck.

I also have a cousin who was carjacked in their garage.

Makes me think of the antenna @ Stalag 17 that would raise out of the flag pole above the camp when they needed to contact the Underground laugh out loud

A target mover sounds like a good use case, but as you said I do live in town and yeah the chances of getting arrested would be pretty high.

Wow...Red sure has a way about him on how to solve a problem.
