To make it painfully obvious note that *all* programming you watch from here will be maxed out at 720p (1080i or 720p broadcasts will be streamed at 720p)

A simple Google search gave this FAQ page about the Recast:
Fire TV Recast FAQs [amazon.com]

Quote :
Can I watch my recorded programs on multiple devices simultaneously?

Yes – you can watch up to 2 programs (live or recorded) on 2 different devices at the same time. This includes playback within the Fire TV app on any mobile device.

Was going to pick one of these up before, but video quality is capped at 720p. I know OTA is only broadcast in 1080i and 720p, but why couldn't they at least support 1080i too and not transcode anything.

I have been a cord cutter for a couple years now. I picked this up as soon as it was available. While I do love it, there are some drawbacks. It only outputs 720p. Depending on the version you get, you can only watch two live streams at once, even with the four tuner version. Depending on your ISP, the out of home streaming works pretty well. Can't say I have had any issues with streaming away from home. The other annoying drawback is the lack of program guide on their fire TV mobile app. You can only see what is currently live on TV via the FireTV app.
I wish they would enable 1080P streaming… That is what bugs me most.

I would be so much happier if they enabled 1080p streaming…

Nice, but I believe you can only have 2 streams at once. Hopefully 2nd gen allows 4 streams at once.

I was waiting for Prime Day to buy one of these, but this is a great price. I wonder if it will be lower on Prime Day. Ugh, decisions!

Me too, if they drop the 4-Tuner version to $150 I may get one.
I hardly watch any live TV and now I'm using a TiVo Bolt (had HTPC with HDHomerun) for OTA only recordings of some PBS shows. With this I can replace the Bolt and have access on all my TVs w/o the monthly sub to TiVo.

Is this for Prime members only or a targeted offer? I'm seeing $229.99/$279.99 for the 2 tuner 500gb/4 tuner 1tb.

Why not just get a tablo? It seems superior to the recast.

Each has it's pros and cons but the most significant to me is price. Tablo is a lot more expensive and only makes sense if someone is adamant about not using Fire ecosystem.

Fire TV Recast is a DVR that lets you watch and record over-the-air TV at home with Fire TV or Echo Show, or on-the-go with a compatible mobile device—with no monthly fees.
Watch and record live sports, local news, late night shows, and other can't miss TV from channels available through an HD antenna (sold separately) like ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and The CW.
With 4 tuners, you can record up to 4 shows at once. Plus, store up to 150 hours of HD programming.
With a compatible Alexa-enabled device, you can use your voice to search for shows, open and control the channel guide, manage and schedule recordings, and help with other requests. Say things like "Alexa, open Channel Guide" or "Alexa, record 'Riverdale.'"
Fire TV Recast delivers the most reliable video streams over Wi-Fi of any over-the-air DVR.
