Google Pixel phones are always unlocked and all you need to do is pop in your current carrier's simcard to start using it. There is no unlock procedure with this phone.

Here are some FAQs.

FAQs,

Is the phone unlocked?
Yes. Google phones are always unlocked. Even if the bestbuy rep activates it with sprint, you can pop in your other carrier simcard right away and it will work with no hassles.

Is sprint giving the discount?
This is more of a bestbuy giving a discount of $200. Why only sprint? Not sure.

Will I be able to cancel sprint line without having to pay full price?
As far as sprint is concerned you bought the phone (i.e. BYOD) and signed up for $30 KickStarter plan. When you chat with reps, they could be very well misinformed and might say you will be charged full price or you have to return the phone to bestbuy to be able to cancel. If that happens, just porting out might be a best idea to avoid the hassle.

What is the cheapest way to port out?
t-mobile : Buy $5 simcard from bestbuy and port out to a $3/month pay as you go plan. https://prepaid.t-mobile.com/pay-as-you-go
H2O : Buy a sim from bestbuy and port out with a minimum recharge of $10 pay as you go plan.
Mint : Looks like bestbuy has a $5 starter plan. Worth looking in to it.

Why is it a good idea to port out instead of cancelling with sprint?
Portout cancels the lines right away with sprint without the hassle of talking to sprint rep and also keeps you under the radar.

A typical usecase,
I am currently on other carrier and have no intention to switch to sprint but want in on this deal and use my current carrier on Pixel 3a by paying $200.
Here is the procedure that I followed with purchase of phone at a bestbuy store,
*Check the availability of the phone at a store.
*Make a visit to bestbuy and confirm the $200 pricing with Sprint kickstarter plan.
*Sprint would do a credit check and approve lines. Give a 6-10 digit pin when asked. Keep this safe as this pin is needed later on for porting out.
*After activating Kickstarter plan, buy a sim card from some other carrier (ex. t-mobile, h2o, mintsim).
*Port out sprint line by using the sprint account number and pin (6-10 digit).
*Confirm you are unable to make calls using sprint line and you are able to make calls from your portedout sim.
*Pop in your current carrier's simcard in to Pixel3a and enjoy the phone!

So could you activate and then use it under another service? Or when you activate it does it lock it to Sprint for a certain period?

Select the "Unlocked" (not Sprint) option and click "Add to Package"

You'll see a list of carriers, and Sprint will be $200.

I tried to checkout and create a new Sprint account and it stopped me and said I would have to finish in store. Anyone else get that?

Did it get to the point of doing a credit check?

Nah it was right after selecting a shipping address. It asks if you want to use an existing Sprint account or create a new one. I don't have one so I went to create a new one and that's what it said.

Ah, yea. You'll need to port in a number online. If you need a new number you have to go in store.
