Yi 4K+ Action Camera with 4k/60fps Resolution, EIS,Voice Control, 12MP Raw Image price dropped to 149.99 on Amazon [amazon.com]. Cheapest I have seen it since it was introduced (they had a bunch of bundle deals then). These are great - I used them for decent 4K video in several locations when recording concerts. Add an external battery and record for hours!

I see the price on Yi's site [yitechnology.com] is down to $194.99, so maybe a general price reduction. Perhaps new models will be out soon?

I'm tempted honestly. I bought a gopro7 black that is probably getting returned to Costco. I have random freezes / lock ups that require me to pull the battery. The 7 was to replace a yi 4k that had been through the farkin RINGER. I'm talking drops, water damage, dirt, mud, rain, snow, cold heat and STILL kept ticking... well the microphone finally broke in one channel so I had to retire it. Great product.

I had this cam, the video quality is decent however, the sound quality is extremely poor!! Even when used with external micro phone. If you don't care about sound recording then this is a ok deal. You have be warned. Check out video/sound examples on YouTube.

Yep, that sounds like a GoPro! I love my Yi, Yi 4k and 4k+. I prefer them all over my GoPros.

I agree that the sound on this camera is a weak point! I only use it to sync the video to my separate audio recorder.

For an action cam, I really don't find the audio to be that bad. I was actually fairly impressed but then again, I haven't played with the newer GoPros to compare. For doing what this camera is made for, sound is more than adequate IMO and the video quality is great.

Love my Yi4k. Not in the market for an upgrade but if you are thinking about getting one, hard to beat this.

Hi guys,

We will have our firstborn next month. I would like to keep all the good memorable moments. But I am not sure if we should get this cam, a dedicated 4k camcorder, or just use our cell phones (mine is Essential Phone PH-1, my wife a SS G9+), or just use our 8yo 1080p camcorder. Not sure if it's worth going 4k over 1080p. Smilie

Thanks very much in advance,
fld

Agreed, the sound is horrendous even in light wind. I think my cell phone (OnePlus 6T) has better audio...

This was my issue with the original 4K cam, I mean its expected to be terrible for the onboard. I only held one thing against the camera and that was no external mic capacity.

I figured this model would be the holy grail and fix it, and I am surprised to see that w/ an external mic its still bad because really at that point past studio grade recording it should come down to the microphone.

Can you tell me what kind of microphone you used? Did you try to add a pre-amp or anything if perhaps the mic was just too much to power with the camera itself?

I've owned DSLRs from Canon and Nikon for 13 years...I currently own a Canon 6D and Sony A7iii. I also have owned GoPros. (I have three kids from age 6 to 13.) All cameras have their purpose, but if all you want is to capture your newborn's moments, I believe your phone is the best camera. I personally loved the Pixel 2 I owned for a year. I now have an iPhone XS. Your Essential Phone and S9 should be good enough for your purpose. It also lets you upload videos quickly. GoPros are fun if you're into editing videos later. By itself, the angle is far too wide - good for action and making sure everything is in the frame, but not so good for home videos, in my opinion. If you want to invest is a camera, get a Canon DSLR or mirrorless for its best in class autofocus in video - an 80D is good, but pricey for many. Hope this helps.

I second the opinion that your phone camera would be best.

The best camera is the one in your hand, and honestly an action cam, camcorder or dslr is always going to be further away than your phone.
