Any thoughts on the JS22 for an intermediate player?
Is it better than one of the cheaper beginner strats?

I wouldn't say "better", from a build quality perspective, but it may be more suited to the player thats learning heavier styles of music.

Soloist is a nice looking guitar for that price with the quilt top.

Thinking the same thing. Also Tremolo bridges scare me. J/k. Mostly. I prefer this, flush to the body, etc.

It's on par with a Squier affinity as far as build quality. If you like heavier music, the high output humbuckers and slim neck might be more your cup of tea. I personally would want to save up to get something a little nicer if this is my "step up" guitar.

I've got a pro soloist SL2Q HT. I really am scared of the Floyds...

I've heard good things about the X series. The quilt top on my soloist pro is gorgeous.

Main differences between X series and pro may be negligible. Fingerboard (ebony on pro series). Pickups (Seymour Duncan's vs Jackson stock I think - have seen videos that give great reviews on Jackson pickups on lower JS models even). Locking tuners (I do like these on my pro but they do add some weight to the headstock surprisingly).

Biggest thing for me was how different it was from my Les Paul. Longer scale and where it sits at the balance point. Hugely different!

Too bad they didn't put the SL2s up. I absolutely LOVE mine. Good beginner's instruments on sale here. If you want a gigable axe though, spend the extra $ on the SL2. Duncan Designed just do not compare to real deal Seymour Duncans.

I was too--for decades. Then, I watched a bunch of YouTube videos on how to set them up properly, and after getting a guitar with one, I love them. Now, I wouldn't get a guitar without a Floyd Rose bridge (so all of these are out of the running).

FYI, OP, the Minion Bass discount seems to be expired.

For the price, I think it's great, if you like that look and body style. It's really more of a beginner / intermediate guitar, but you won't find a better guitar for less.

That said, comparable guitars in all sorts of styles can be had for $200, so you're better off buying that you like. And for an intermediate, I'd recommend stepping up to the $300-500 range, like the Soloist here. You just get better components that will last longer and not require replacement.

First time I tried to tune a Floyd, not knowing what I was doing, it was a frustrating 20 minutes where I feared I had made a terrible mistake. Then I figured out how it works, it clicked, and I got it in tune.

Fast forward two weeks, and I can comfortably do a full setup on a Floyd without issue, and I love it. It's just so much fun, and I can't imagine not having a Floyd.

But I still have my old standard guitar for alternate tunings. That's not going anywhere. Smilie
