Nothing at all, some people only want the latest and greatest. The newer Surface Laptop 2 has a better processor selection, but I can speak from experience that the first gen is a rock solid performer. Its not a gaming machine, but I use mine for business intelligence work and it handles it like a champ.

Actually this one is better in the graphics department because of the iris plus graphics vs the normal uhd620 of the new model. If I needed a laptop, I'd be all over this.

This vs the Surface Laptop 2 i5 option. This (old version) is 15% faster on singlethread, 20% slower on multithread. I would say its kind of a wash depending on your workload. Newer one is more power efficient though. Can't comment on graphics.

EDIT - looks like this (Iris - old version) graphics is ~20% FASTER than Surface Laptop 2 i5

This price is for Windows 10 S - would hate to be restricted to just the Microsoft store.
looks like you can get the windows 10 pro version for $60 more, but it only comes in burgundy.

You an also switch out of S mode to get full functioning Windows 10, but you won't be able to switch back. From the Microsoft site:

To increase security and performance, Windows 10 in S mode runs only apps from the Microsoft Store. If you want to install an app that isn't available in the Microsoft Store, you'll need to permanently switch out of S mode. There's no charge to switch out of S mode, but you won't be able to turn it back on. If you're blocked from switching and your device belongs to an organization, check with your administrator. Your organization can choose to keep all devices in S mode.

On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
Find the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, then select the Go to the Store link.

Note
Don't select the link under Upgrade your edition of Windows. That's a different process that will keep you in S mode.

On the page that appears in the Microsoft Store (Switch out of S mode or a similar page), select the Get button. After you confirm this action, you'll be able to install apps from outside the Microsoft Store.

Agreed. I bought one in cobalt and could upgrade to pro with no issue. For me gen 1 is good enough. Not sure if the difference between gen 1 and gen 2 makes much difference for everyday use.
