On the market for a laptop which will be used by a high school student for some JAVA programming.

Wondering if I should buy this or the one which Costco is selling for $399 (https://slickdeals.net/f/13150864-lenovo-ideapad-s340-15-6-1080p-ips-touchscreen-laptop-intel-core-i...

The Costco one has a vastly better (IPS) screen. I'd pay the $110 just for the better screen; you also get twice the storage with the Costco model. 128GB is far too small, and swapping in a 256GB drive would cost maybe $30-40. Also, the Costco one has a backlit keyboard, which I believe this doesn't.

While they have the same model number (S340), the Costco one feels much nicer. The surfaces are aluminum or a nice rubberized plastic. The cheaper S340 models like this Walmart one are hard plastic, and the keyboard doesn't feel quite as nice.

y'all realize this CPU only has two cores right?
I use a second gen i5 with 8gb of RAM and an SSD (that has worse single core and dual core performance) and it flies for basic stuff. Unless you really need to do some intensive work this is more than powerful enough for most tasks you will throw at it.

This looks great, I'd get it if I didn't have like 2 personal laptops and 4 work laptops sitting at home. It's disappointing picking up a charging adapter to find out it's not the right one when you have that many laptops.. lol.

Is this touchscreen? Also does it have the extra slot for 2.5" SSD? Not sure to go with this or Costco deal for $399

Solid deal for a slick laptop. I got this recently with the i5 and I'm very satisfied. For this price, it's one of the better packaged and quality laptops available. Good clicky keys (at least for the back-lit ver.), decent sound, very light and portable.

Welp I just placed an order for pickup next week. This is a great laptop in every way except the screen, but I use a razor vizio 1080p 22 inch matte screen tv at home via hdmi out. Really wanted a new laptop to replace my 5 year old dell I got at Walmart. I'll trade that into bestbuy for 80 bucks store credit.

Tempted to use as a HTPC rather than a NUC. As I understand, any Kabylake or newer Intel CPU supports the HDR standards... should do 4K, right? Wonder if the audio chip supports Atmos?

Still wondering about battery capacity/runtime.

Nevermind, says 8.5hrs. Costco says 36 Wh.

Next question is what version HDMI is it?

Um, if a couple of clicks = lots of hoops, I guess so. From howtogeek.com:

It's easy to leave S Mode. To do so, first launch the "Microsoft Store" app. In the Store, click the magnifying glass "Search" button on the toolbar. Search for "Switch out of S Mode." Click "Learn More" and the Store will walk you through the process of leaving S Mode. The process will just take a few clicks.
That's just too much work for some people.

Can't you just go to settings to disable S mode, make your user account without admin control and make a new master account you'll never use admin unless you need to install a different web browser?

No. That's a story from the past. Current Lenovo makes a good, clean product.
