I wouldn't compare the ultra to a shield myself. I'd only compare it to a firetv, appletv or androidtv. If your looking to play games on the same device you watch content on, get the shield, otherwise the Roku is the way to go unless you just like spending money. And if your going to step into a shield then I'd seriously look at a xbone or ps.

Kids probably put it in bath mode.

I have both, & use both. I use the Shield more, tho'. I prefer the the Roku remote over the one on the Shield. Of course, you can buy an aftermarket remote for the Shield. And, you can use your phone as a remote, on the Roku.

Same question as jman100. Is it worth it to watch free Asian shows and other country's dramas?

Get the shield I love mine and you can download so many free apps free shows. I have roku ultra and am not a fan, more for the kids to use. they sometime have sale for the shield with the controller which is pretty sweet as well.

If you plan on doing something like use Plex to watch 4K remuxed content, go with the Shield. The Roku can play it fine, but not when you have to enable PGS subtitles. The Shield will play it perfectly.
If you're mainly using streaming services, either is probably fine, but the Nvidia definitely has more power under the hood for more than just watching content.

I own a Roku Ultra but am looking into getting an Nvidia Shield

Just over a year of ownership with mine and the remote control partially stopped working. I've been trying to contact ROKU support for the past 3 weeks but they just keep sending me e-mails telling me they have a backlog and to confirm whether or not I am still experiencing a problem. Their warranty is just 90 days. The 6 buttons in the middle and the volume button on mine no longer work. I was hoping my kids put it in demo mode or something but I can't find anything online and ROKUs customer support sucks a big fat one. Buyer beware if you have any issues. I think my remote is toast anyway. Recently, after turning on the TV, it causes the volume to go up to 100%. I opened it up and it looks like a capacitor may have failed. There's a bunch of white residue around one. They sell replacement remotes but they are close to $40 with shipping.

I have the roku 4k ultra and have had serious issues with its firmware. Constantly freezes even with steady internet connection. Not a fan of the roku 4k ultra!

I have a couple Roku TVs and love them but the Ultra doesn't do Atmos surround so I ended up with ATV4K instead.
