Can anyone recommend a blog, thread or wiki to learn about Synology products, NAS and why people should buy this?

I'm always very curious as to the whole ecosystem for Plex and RAID setups but I'm unfamiliar with the performance benefits compared to a nice computer running Plex server.

I learned a lot from the Synology Madness series of podcasts on know-how (twit).

I'll just tell you vs a computer it's pros are it's dedicated to serving up data and having large storage potential. Synology also has a suite of apps that are great and for me replace subscription type apps. Example drive replaces Dropbox, dsnote replaces Evernote. Ect. These apps are free and you know where your data is vs using cloud services since you own the nas. A nas is also more efficient than a dedicated pc for the same use.now cons are a pc can be upgraded easier, you can have a vastly better gpu or cpu allowing for greater transcoding possibilities. For me I just use a pc to make sure my content is in a acceptable format then throw it on the nas and it works great.

Google "why to buy a NAS". Several articles come up from reputable sites.

The hard part about this method is that there are so many shills out there. I think asking for a forum is actually asking about where they can find unbiased, legitimate info on what is best to get and why. Imagine using the same search technique for finding a good mattress. Apparently purple and Casper are the end all best mattresses according to all influencers. truth? who knows?

I just came here to rip on this for not supporting NFS.

But then I verified and it does NFS.

So now I'm thinking of buying one myself to maybe replace my old Drobo...

people should buy this if they want a simple, plug and play device they have to do nothing with. just plug in the disks and that's it. You are paying for that convenience. They are overpriced for what you get and you could easily build a much nicer NAS for not much more that could hold more drives which would allow for parity drives and more redundancy.

If you are buying for Plex, you will need to direct play everything. There is no transcoding possible with this version. That being said, Plex works great for my specific use case.
