Have 4 of these (picked them up in deals like this) and like the Gen 1 the best. I know the newer gen units supposedly have better speaker hardware but I can't tell the difference.

Any reason to get these over echo dots?

The speakers on the originals echo are much better than even the 3rd gen dot...

Agree. First gen or Original Plus is best. Prefer the dial to buttons. Sounds great.

Same here, I've had mine since the beginning. Just ordered this refurb so I'm hoping it is in good shape. I almost purchased the 2nd gen during Prime day, but read some reviews saying the first gen sounded better.

These first gens tend to die after a while because something inside burns out. Not sure exactly what but that's probably why there are so many refurbs.
Have few since they have been released. Still going strong.

I have 6 first gen Echos, all work well with the best sound.
The only echo with better sound are the 7 & 10 inch Shows
I bought my first one when it first came out and still works great.

Got one last time, after a day or so, the audio output no longer worked. Had to unplug/plug back in, then dies again after a couple of days. This happened after the warranty expired. But was able to trade it in later on for a newer model for pretty much the same price I paid.
