In commemoration of today's 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, Vudu has the documentary in 4K UHD on sale for $9.99. This matches a previous front page deal at FandangoNow. This film is MA compatible so it will port to the other standard linked accounts as well (though not necessarily in 4K - some may only port in HD).

I've always wondered about documentaries in 4K that have a significant amount of old footage (I think this does)... Doesn't that make a good portion of this movie non-4K?

I guess the audio can probably be better on the old footage but the video can't be made that much better.

The video looks surprisingly good in regular HD. Apparently 16mm film has a maximum horizontal resolution of 1800 lines which is quite a bit more than the 1080 so you should get something more out of the 4K.

The restoration/quality/colors on this documentary are amazing. I've seen it in IMAX (45 minute version) at Kennedy Space Center about two weeks ago and also own the 4K version from Fandango.

Back story: CNN partnered with a world-renowned restoration company based in Europe to handle the footage.

Actually if you take it from the original film more than 4K is possible depending on the film. That being said they did an incredible job with this. It isn't all 4k quality, but the parts they had the film are incredible.

35 mm flim is the equivalent of 40k digital.

I watched about half of it last night before falling asleep (not the movie's fault but my schedule's) and I can say that I was full of amazement and wonder for every second of it. Between the restored footage and the fact NOTHING new seems to have been added you feel like you were at the launch.

An amazing 4K documentary film. A must-see. It's not your typical doc film, because there is no narration and no interviews. The added film score is simply wonderful. I've seen it 3 times and will watch the IMAX ("First Steps" - 45 min.) version for the first time later today.

Note that the 4K is only available digitally at this time. I'm looking forward to the 4K blu-ray release....hopefully this year.
