In my opinion, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Zero are the best of these, and I'd play them in that order. Even though Zero is a prequel and happens before Kiwami, Kiwami is a remake of the 1st game and I reccommend playing them in this order in case the prequel spoils something from Kiwami.

So basically in my opinion play the games in this order

Yakuza Kiwami (remake of Yakuza)
Yakuza Zero
Yakuza Kiwami 2 (remake of Yakuza 2)
Yakuza 3
Yakuza 4
Yakuza 5
Yakuza 6 (this is the end of Kiryu Kazuma's storyline)

and if you really like these games, play Judgement which is a different series but same developer studio and similar gameplay.

If you liked Shenmue back then, you'll love Yakuza. You may even love it regardless.

I love The Yakuza Series. Man Sega is on fire right now, and with thier purchase of Atlus, they are doing all the right stuff. In for all of these.

I agree with this.

I just finished Zero and absolutely loved it. Beautiful game and a captivating story. Now I'm playing Kiwami and I sort of wished I had played it before Zero. I feel like there's a bit of a disconnect between the two games. Such a drastic shift at the end in Zero and in ways, just doesn't really make sense to me. I feel like if I had played Kiwami, I'd have so many "OHHHHHHHHHH" moments through Zero. Either way, GREAT GAMES.

While I agree completely with this comment, I found it funny. I think that combo is what most people prefer. Good graphics with a good story. I can't think what else would go into a good game.

I would recommend Kiwami -> 0 -> Kiwami again. I just replayed Kiwami after finishing 0 for the first time. I didn't realize how many references to 0 in Kiwami until I played it again, especially the dialogues between Kiryu and Majima.

The best by far is Yakuza 0. It's the prequel game to the entire Yakuza franchise. Buy that and play it. If you love it wait six months or so and pick up Yakuza Kiwami. Shenmue I and II are interesting relics, but you really had to play them when they originally came out on Dreamcast to fully appreciate them.
