5 1/2 hour layover, and travel time is 10 hours longer overall vs a non-stop option. I guess if you're looking to go as cheap as possible and willing to trade so much time (and sanity of traveling for 22 hours) - go for it.

Just wanted to share my experience with Hainan on my last trip. If there are no delays and cancellations, Hainan is at par or better than US airlines.
Unfortunately when there are delays, Hainan doesn't even blink in throwing you under the proverbial bus. As it happened for me where for some unknown reason the flight from Guangzhou to Chengdu was cancelled. The official reason given by the airline was bad weather when the friends in Chengdu confirmed was weather was just fine and other airlines had normal operating flights between the cities on that day. Hainan didnt really care about flight rearrangement and kept giving me a letter as a proof for delay. After some consistent pursuit of my plight we got an alternate route after a day and half, but I saw several people who were booked after three days. There were a couple of folks who had earlier cancellation and were put on the now cancelled flight, so effectively adding 4 days of delays to get back to US. The ground staff at Guangzhou airport didnt give a damn to people's issues and some poor folks were sent to other airlines counter (apparently about some code sharing) only to be sent back again to Hainan. It was a total chaos and mess. I regret going to the hotel offered by the airline for the overnight stay -- it was a total dump -- much better hotels to be had in China for as little as $40 a night. Our rebooked flight went fine with minor issues (special meal orders missing). Just my two cents in case you have flights onwards from LA on different tickets.

Beijing is also really grimy and industrial for the most part. Good if you want to get to the Great Wall, otherwise not my favorite place to visit.
To each his own, but imo Beijing is the best place to visit as it has by far the most places to go and the best balance of modern and historical. The Great Wall is probably the least interesting or exciting place to see in Beijing, but maybe that's because I lived there for a few years and had to go to the wall like 6 times with different visitors.

Hainan just cancelled my October 13 flight to Beijing from LV yesterday. It is a pain to get your money back as they don't refund u automatically. They will not reimburse you or give discounts on any flights in the future for the inconvenience.

Transpacific business class for under $1500 is a bargain. The problem is once you travel on business class, you don't want to go back to economy again. Asian based airlines are normally a head and shoulder above US airlines in terms of hard products and service. Hainan seems to be a best of all China based airlines, I might want to buy and give myself 24 hours to decide.

They just cancelled my flight from Beijing to Las vegas on September 28th, this is the second year they have cancelled on me.
like the previous person says, if you can get on the flight, the experience is pretty average, but tons of cancellations.
