No, this doesn't give you traffic info nor driving directions. Also can't play angry birds on it.

Seriously, here are some key points:

IPX7 water resistant, and generally much more rugged and droppable than your typical cellphone.
World topographic map. None of that google-map offline crap that limits you to a small region.
Uses 2 AA batteries. Up to 16 hours of usage. How long does your cell phone last with googlemap turned on?

This is an extreme niche device for people that goes off-grid in a serious way. Of course, everybody should have paper maps and a plan-B...

This is a bit like saying there's no need for a 4x4 truck, as you can just use a car.

Yes, for 95% of people that's true 95% of the time (or 99% or whatever). But for the remaining few percent, there is a real difference.

My Garmin GPS is now over 8 years old, and still comes with me every single time I go hiking. My phones comes too, but I'll guarantee you it's not the phone I grab when I want to check where I am/check a map/etc.

For those that think a phone is fine - and it almost certainly is for you - then feel free to move on. For those that know the value of a unit like this, it's a good price.

Don't say that, you know nothing about outdoor equipments. If you go into the mountains for multi-day backpacking, I guarantee you will need this junk instead of the gps app on your iPhone.

How does this Garmin GPS compare to GPS built inside modern cell phone (Apple iPhone / Samsung Galaxy / etc)? Does it have longer-battery life? Better satellite connection in remote areas?

These are more "rugged" and also most buy them for the TOPO maps, like the 100K

More off-the-grid use. Usually pre download maps on standalone GPS units. This can be done on cell phones now too.

Accuracy is probably comparable.
Cell phones have added perk of using other technology like Wi-Fi to help find your position too, so GPS stand alone might be a little slower.

definitely more niche use case than it was 2p years ago. battery life might do better than cell phone on a lengthy trip.

Many handhold gps use aa battery which is easy to find. And it supposes use less power than a cell phone. It is sturdy too. Yes,. all those are not problems for cellphones if you all extras.

This is something you bring hunting or to a similar situation where cell phone reception isn't available

With technology out there like maps.me or ATAK civilian, these are not near worth the cost since those are both free apps.

If you are trying to get within one foot of target, I'd stick with this. If you can accept 2ft deviation, don't t spend the money.

Your phone probably already have this feature. As far as I know, Samsung phones had this features for years... Look for "Location tags" in your in-phone camera app settings.

Can two of these be connected so that each user can know where the other user is?

For example, if someone stays at the camp site and I go trail riding, can the gps user at base camp see my location?
