Read the wiki and thread, but general advice - if you want an unlocked phone and have not bought already - STAY AWAY! Not worth the hassle and risk (turning into a mediocre deal at best).

FAQs:

1. How to make phone unlock?
You must maintain service with Verizon for 60 days and it will unlock automatically.

*confirmed 7/30 use the chat option under support on your verizon account page. Request a real person via chat, ask them to unlock the phone because you will be traveling to an area without service.
IF they unlock the phone, it will become unlocked when a sim for a different carrier is inserted.

2. I received the phone and it's not activated?
The phone was shipped to you and was never opened. Bestbuy process the order but had about 5days to sync up with Verizon. So be patient, your new phone line # would be automaticly activate at that time. And Verizon will email you regarding the line and account number (partial numbers). To activate the sim, you use the original Verizon sim with the phone turned on and active as it prompt you through the process
** Do not call Verizon to activate, you might end up with 2 lines once in sync.

3. What's my new phone number?
Bestbuy did not provide any info in the shipping box but the phone package itself.
Either call bestbuy or wait about 5days when the line activated in Verizon's system. Then find it on the phone when you active the Verizon sim/phone.

4. How to pay off device?
Through Verizon App , in-store or on website
https://www.verizonwireless.com/s...9e0a1c0e0e

*use verizon app chat feature, type "pay off device" and this should allow you to chose the Z4 to pay off.

5. Best way to cancel?
Up to you, call or online chat or Port out.

*confirmed 7/30 use the online chat feature on the desktop website under the support section of your account. type "cancel line" and this should direct you to a rep who is able to help. I told them i had some personal issues and no longer need the line. They were able to cancel for me. (i do not know my final bill after canceling.)

6. Big bill comes up...
Depends on how many days you were in service... Call or chat to get some fee waived.

7. I canceled my line, how can I check my balance or next bill?
Link: https://myvpostpay.verizonwireles...n#/Preview

*7/30 was able to cancel my line via online chat. i cannot see my bill any longer. The bill that was due was ~$107. including $35plan $20 smart phone access $40 activation and misc. fees and taxes. So far i have paid $40 in taxes and $20 to pay off the phone. The phone is unlocked and the account is cancelled. purchased on the 26th and arrived on the 30th

-----------------------------------------

Some notes for newbies,
For all these years, verizon postpaid phones used to be unlocked. That has changed. Be aware.
Verizon starts locking their postpaid phones approved by FCC on 7/19/2019 for a period of first 60 days.
https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/2...c-approves

**
Someone please clarify how do you login to Verizon as new customer to pay off your phone without booting up with the sim card to activate? It seems to need Phone number or account number which are not provided during Best Buy/Verizon initial purchase.
- call best buy and ask for your phone number. use that to add your account to your verizon online account. make a verizon online account if you do no have one already.
**

Things to avoid,
Cancel the line by directly calling/chatting with verizon (Its best to keep it low and just portout with out ever talking to anyone in verizon).
Delaying the port out process (If the port out is after 3 days of activation, I believe you could be charged with activation charges. I am not completely sure about this. If anyone knows better update this wiki.)

Some of the online orders seem to be getting cancellation emails as BestBuy is unable to activate. If its possible to visit the store and get one that would be the best route. While you are there, if you are planning on porting out, don't forget to get a sim card that you want to port out to.

Ok. My latest update. First off this deal should really be labeled ymmv.

I picked up my phone yesterday from Best Buy. I'm on Verizon already so I just added a new line to my account for $0.83 a month. I couldn't activate the phone myself, it wouldn't let me, and it also came locked to Verizon as everyone has seen. I did try starting it first with an AT&T and then a Sprint sim before activating it on Verizon but neither worked. It stayed locked. So expect it to come locked.

I actually had to get on the phone with Verizon to get it activated, but the rep was able to do it in about 10 minutes. No problems.

Once activated on the My Verizon app under Devices the phone was now there, it wasn't earlier, and it said there was 24 payments due for $0.83. But there was no option to pay it off early even though all my other phones had the option on the same page right under each phone number. Probably because it was the first billing cycle but who knows. At this point I was stuck as Verizon wouldn't let me pay it off in full over the phone either.

Fortunately, I took some awesome persons advice on SD and used the Verizon app's live chat/digital assistant. When it asked what I wanted I typed in "pay off device". It then brought up my eligible devices immediately. I picked the new Z4 and was able to pay it off in full right there. $20. My account now says it's completely paid off and I'm eligible for an upgrade. Whoever posted that tip, you rock!

I then called Verizon and told them that when I bought the phone at Best Buy they said that the phone should be unlocked. I was then told Verizon's current policy is you need to be on an active plan for 60 days to be unlocked. But the rep offered to send in a ticket to request unlocking it early for me. He said it may take 24 hours or it may take a week but it will be unlocked. This last part is just luck and what happens when you are kind to Verizon reps on the phone and ask them how there day is going lol.

FWIW, I also used the app to change the phone number Verizon gave me with the phone since I didn't like it. The option is under devices. I wanted a better number with a different area code that I could choose myself before I port it out. It was super easy to do.

Because of all the effort of multiple chats and phone calls, tomorrow I'm going to see if I can get the $40 activation fee waived, but who knows. I'm not holding out hope on that one.

So long story short is if you are already on Verizon this is a pretty good deal. And if you want to port the phone out and don't care if it's unlocked to resell it as a Verizon locked phone it's also a good deal. But make no mistake this whole thing was a hassle and the results are ymmv. So take that as you will.

As for the phone itself, I'm really happy with it. I already had a Z2 Force and all the Moto Mods I want so this was kind of a no brainer for me. The phone so far works great despite having a weaker processor than the Z2 Force. If no one told me that I never would have known.

The camera is a huge step up over the Z2 and Z3 and while the night vision tech isn't quite as good as the Google Pixel's night vision tech, it's still awesome considering what I paid for the phone and definitely takes better pics in low light then my iPhone 8 Plus.

The bezelless screen is really nice and bright and looks very good right next to my Z2. As for gaming, I mostly play emulated games with the Moto Mod gamepad like Mame or N64 games and for that it works great. I haven't tried any graphically intensive games yet though. I do plan to try and use the phone with my Moto Mod gamepad using PS4 remote play at some point. Which will be awesome if it works well. Hopefully it does.

128gb is plenty of memory for me as it's a second phone, but I did throw in a 128gb SD card as well for all my music and pics and such. So 256gb total should be fine. And I can always put in a bigger SD card later if I need to.

Overall this deal was a pain in the ass, but worth it for me personally. Your mileage may vary.

If you're just looking to flip it I'd try to unlock it but still wouldn't worry about unlocking it. If they won't unlock it for you immediately I would Just sell it as Verizon locked phone and you'll still make a profit.

If you want to take the phone to another carrier ASAP, I'd try going to a Verizon store or Best Buy as soon as you have the phone and ask nicely if they'll unlock it for you. 50/50 shot that it works, but you can always return it to Best Buy, cancel the phone service and call it a day if you don't get the results you want.

Btw if you're keeping the phone the two top must have mods to get imo are the JBL Speaker and the Projector Mod. I also have the Tumi battery pack mod that also adds wireless charging which I love, but they are hard to find these days. Also the phone seems to have an Alexa always on feature built in if you turn it on, which kinda makes the Alexa speaker mod redundant since the sound on that is not as good as the JBL speaker and you can use both hands free. This wasn't an option on the Z2.

So that's my 2 cents. Hope it's useful. Good luck everyone!

so basically:
1. Setup new account with Verizon
2. Pay off the phone as soon you get it.
3. Cancel line within 3 days to reverse the activation fee.
4. wait 60 days for the phone to get unlocked?

Hi. First thanks.

So I have an existing account and basically want to do the same thing you're suggesting, but by adding a new line instead of starting a new account.

I get the impression from the other threads that once I buy it I just contact Verizon and pay it off in full and then cancel the new line after. Pretty close to what you said. Does that seem right?

I'm a customer, and I got this message when adding a line whether I chose this deal or the $120:

Sorry, but Verizon declined your new line.
If you'd like to purchase this phone, you'll have to buy it at the full retail price.

I'm wondering if it is because:
- I placed an iPhone order a couple days ago for new line & just got shipped today, or
- I already bought this Moto Z4 last month for a new line, the $120 deal?

Also I am wondering why they keep offering this phone cheaper and cheaper. So far at Verizon website Z3 pricing is always more than Z4. I hope nothing wrong with it.

Same. I added then cancelled a bunch of lines a couple months ago, assume I'm in some lock-out period that hopefully expires after a period of time. Anyone have this error but still able to add a line in store?

Because of above, I can't get far enough into the process to determine if bill credits are involved. If not, should be good to go to get the phone and pay it off shortly thereafter.
