Just as a FYI, this isn't the latest version that was just released not too long ago (Ecobee SmartThermostat)

We have had 2 ecobees over the past 4 years, the 3 (regular/OG version, not lite) and currently the 4.
We moved homes during that time and the 4 was purchased a few months after moving into new place.

Should make clear to those on the fence--the server issues people are talking about wont affect the device functioning in your home or with your hvac. They could interfere with your ability to manage the device remotely or via app. Personally have never noticed an outage bc between the schedule, smart home function, and remote sensors the thing pretty much runs itself so i find i dont open the app much anymore. Hence havent noticed this or other outages (but totally agree service should be available and working whenever you want it!)

Here are the issues we have had during ownership time:

-one remote sensor just died. Changed batteries, tried to re-link, no luck. I didnt bother going through support process because i had an extra laying around. Out of 6 sensors all time that was the only failure.

-at one point i was affected by a server outage because i couldnt access my historical data. But that isnt urgent and the next time i thought to check, the data access was working again.

That's really it, been great overall. Some people may find difficult to add the wiring harness although it is really simple and if you know your hvac well enough to change a filter you'll probably be fine.

We have several family members with Nest so i have had exposure to that and still prefer Ecobee.

Just my 2 cents but sure feels like Amazon acquiring Ecobee will be the missing piece in the Ring ecosystem (assuming they want to compete piece for piece w Google and Nest).

One way is by model number: This offer is for model Model # EB-2STATE4-VB with the 4 indicating it is the ecobee 4 model.

The newest model is: EB-STATE5-01

Also, the newest model is called the Ecobee SmartThermostat

Got a Glas Thermostat from amazon on prime day for $133. Thing looks badass with a transparent OLED screen. Some functionality as nest.

It's the ecobee4. The newest one is just called New Ecobee or something like that.

Ecobee 4 is old model. They rename it to ecobee without the numbering

Because the ecobee 5 was just released. Not a huge upgrade and the Ecobee 4 is perfectly fine for most households but the new model has a better microphone for Alexa integration and an upgraded room sensor. There are some marginal differences but probably not worth an extra $100+
