Maybe someone out there can help me figure out something bizarre. I'm going thru random emails and I get this one from WalMart. It's their usual email trying to sell you stuff, but this one starts off with 4 items (with pictures and everything) and says "How would you like to reorder these items". But the bizarre thing is I only ordered those items "In Store" and never "On Line". When I check out, I always use my Chase Double Cash card there. Can that be it? Two of the items I used manufacturer coupons on, the other 2 nothing. Can that be it? I never browsed any of those items online anywhere. I don't have any WalMart card of any kind. I never used that site where you take photos of your receipts to get points. So how did WalMart track my purchases I made IN the store? Thank you.

Yes sir!

When you use a credit card online at walmart.com, then you use the same card in the store, they know it's you and email you about your instore purchases, too.

In other words, do not buy vibrating panties for your side piece if your missus knows your email password

Try walking through the makeup section. Big monitors of the overhead camera that beep & freeze frame on faces as people walk down the aisle. IDK why it's in that section only, but locally it is.

I was asked to see my receipt of 2 packs of pen before I exit the door. After the door greeter handed back my receipt and I started to walk 2 steps, Loss Prevention came after me and just looked into my reusable bag which I had Sunday circular ads and coupons. I asked why? Her only reply was just checking. After exiting the door, I was so mad as to why she did that and decided to go back in. Took my phone out and took a picture of both of them together talking. LP lady was like "you can't take picture". I'm like "sue me then. I want picture of both of you so I can complain.". Filed a complain and got the LP supervisor called back the following day and apologize after reviewing the store video and see no reason why LP lady did that. I also mentioned why the door greeter didn't ask to see the receipt from an elderly couple ahead of me? I said if you guys going to check receipt, then check everyone receipt and not randomly profile and chose. He said they were told to only check receipt on big ticket item. Ok, so my 2 packs of pen worth $20 was a big ticket item.

If they have the screen and show yourself on them, they don't actually record or anything, just there for the intimidation factor. Just like the ones on the old self checkouts. (I assume the new ones are the same, but don't know for sure.)

You can just tell the greeter "no, thanks" when asked for your receipt and then just walk out. That's what I do, and usually get a grumpy ok back.

Had they treated me like this, I surely would have trotted over to the return desk, returned the items, and marked the store on my do not go to list. They need you a lot more than you need them.

My area has very lax security in stores, no one even at the doors of the Walmarts in my area.

Thanks... will remember to do exactly that next time.

That absolutely annoys the hell out of me. If I need anything down any of those aisles that have the monitors that beep every time you make any movement, I plan ahead of time so I go to exactly what I need and get out of there ASAP. Incredibly annoying!

I always figure that in addition to checking the receipts of big ticket items, there are random spot checks. It may be a bag of pens, it could be your vibrating panties (they sell those?!). I say random, because if they just selected the people that look like deadbeats, they would be in trouble for that too.

Google Walmart customer photos. Not much dignity on display. No wonder some people don't get asked for a receipt and you did. Ah, I see you bought some pens today? Thank you for shopping at Walmart! (Please) come see us again!

FWIW, I do shop frequently at Walmart myself. Hopefully never photographed.

Yes but how do they go from your receipt (or photo in cosmetics) to your email address? That's what I haven't figured out yet and what worries me.

My local Walmart has all cosmetics locked up. Yes, the entire section of numerous aisles. You have to ask someone to open and get items, even $4 items.

Last time I was at Walmart, there was a lady scanning all receipts with a handheld device people we could leave. She said really loudly "why you all acting like you have never seen this before." I replied "I really have not!!" I asked when it started, she was ohh weeks ago. I still don't know what is up with that and I refuse to go back.

They just started that in my WalMart also. This woman jumps out of nowhere and wants to scan my receipt. I let her as I couldn't really care less. But that's not going to stop any shoplifters if she doesn't also look at the items in your bags like they do at Sams or BJs. Very strange.

My store had a line of 10 people in line trying to exit. I don't want to be there on a weekend this month when parents are buying back to school stuff for their kids. I cannot imagine how long the line will be then.

As to your question about them tracking your in store purchase. The tech they have to track the behavior of shoppers is really good. I read this book on habits and there was an entire chapter on Target's system. I imagine, that Walmart has followed in their footsteps and hired the similar firms/systems. Target's system is so good that they can also predict if a household is about to have a baby. And this is not by buying obvious things like prenatal vitamins etc. They are good at tracking households and sending coupons or discounts without you knowing it is catered to you. However, like you, I have noticed a lot of other retailers doing it but not being good as Target is at hiding that is what they are doing.
