I can throw out a complaint or at least a word of caution. I have a similar model from a couple years ago. Those hinges will break. Look it up on the internet. I had to pay $100 just to replace the hinges. The guy who did the repair said the hinges should sell for like $10 but they charged almost $70 for them. A quick google search will tell you there is an issue that happens a lot. It's a great price for a basic machine but you will end up needing to fix it up after a bit of time. My hinges broke in about 18 months. The screen also has a lot of glost touch issues. I just want to let people know what they're getting into before buying a similar machine. I like the machine but the repairs are expensive, and I didn't even bother fixing the touch screen. I just turned off touch.

Even if it is free, you won't be able to enjoy the freedom with 4GB RAM.

If this is the same laptop that Microcenter had for $299, then memory can support 16gb totaling 20gb, and while the on board SSD is sata, it can also support nvme. I know because I upgraded both with zero issues.

If the 4gb ram is soldered to board , you have to use another 4gb stick with same speed in order to make it dual channel support . That's something to note if you are keen about dual channel enablement

I also have the model from Microcenter and have been very happy with it. I did upgrade the RAM to 12GB (added 8GB from MC) but have been going back and forth on the SSD upgrade. Is it worth the upgrade performance-wise to go to an NVMe unit instead? I'm not really hurting for space (use it mainly for browsing and some old-school Steam games like FTL). It seems so quick as it is, I just don't know if it's worth the hassle right now.

If it's like the MC unit, this is incorrect. Adding RAM that is 4GB and above and has the correct timings will show dual channel support. Link

This has a little bit faster processor than the Microcenter one. I'd say if you don't have a MC nearby, yes it's a good deal. Someone in the MC thread got it in to a Hackintosh, so there's that. I will say expect to drop another $30 dollars and get the RAM upgraded. It's easy enough, just take your time. The screen is really nice, and using it in tablet mode is actually not as dumb as I thought it would be. Using it in "Tent" mode also works well for streaming videos if you don't have a lot of space (small desk, etc).

MC Thread with a lot more info.

I needed more storage so took the opportunity to also upgrade to nvme. But from what I hear, most people won't notice the performance increase from sata to nvme on this laptop, outside of benchmarks or SSD intensive apps
