Bought this yesterday. Immediately noticed two things:

1. 8GB is not enough RAM.

-System was hovering at 75-80% utilization at idle. (This could be partially because of all of the DELL bloatware that was pre-loaded and updates that were needed.) Once all updates had completed and I removed most of the bloatware, Utilization sits at around 60% at idle with nothing open.

2. This thing runs HOT.

-Temps all over the place at idle ranging from 55-75C. During windows updates, this climbed to the mid-80s and stayed in the 75-85C range while running updates and installing software.

-After 5 minutes of light gaming (Rocket League on medium settings) I hit 100c, so I shut it down. This isn't a gaming laptop, it's a small cooktop. Pretty sure I'm going to cancel the extra memory I ordered and just take this thing back.

So...for someone who is more on the casual side looking to start getting into PC gaming this is feeling like a decent deal (for the 799 variant), yet I'm not seeing traction. Is there something I am missing? Is there a better deal I should consider instead?

It is a pretty good deal for these specs IMO. There are some other deals with the 1660 Max Q (which is slower than this but more power efficient). I can't speak to the build quality and overall feel of this laptop, so maybe that's the difference? I know G3 is Dell's bottom tier gaming computer so that may be a factor.

Thanks for your reply. I know G3 tends to be on the lower end but some of the reviews/comments I read is that the 1660Ti Max Q is actually nicely paired with the G3 build. I'm also reading the G3 was redone a bit in 2019. Just trying to find the best blend of value and performance. The ROG at Best Buy running for 900 has also caught my eye. It has a 120 screen and double the memory but is a Ryzen processor. Decisions decisions.

Thanks for your input and any input you have Smilie

Same dilemma for me lol. I think I'll go with this one. This one has a HDD/SDD bay, so I'll reuse the extra SSD I have on my current laptop while saving $100 at the same time.

I'd rather get the ROG from Walmart if it were still on sale, as compared to the AMD one, assuming you're only gaming on it.

Yeah the ROG from Walmart tempted me but I didn't pull the trigger. The only one I regret not getting was the Helios during Prime Day. I was researching it because the sale seemed too good but by the time I went to pull the trigger it was already gone.

Dell always skips the higher refresh rate panels on their lower end models as well. So that can always be a deciding factor.

This would be instabuy if it was at least a 120 panel. 800 for the specs is still a good value from my perspective. That's why I'm weighing the ROG for 100 more with the 120 panel and double the memory. I don't know enough about Ryzen though to know if that should be a deal breaker since it's not Intel.

Thanks again for your feedback Smilie

The ROG with the Ryzen is a bit slower than the Intel in the Dell. The ROG graphics is much slower that than Dell as well. But the ROG has the good panel. Sucks right?

Lol it does! I do like the ROG is lighter though. Still, maybe saving 100 bucks makes the G3 a winner then. The question is do I wait to see if something new pops up down the road or pull the trigger Smilie

$800 is the sweet spot for gaming laptops IMO, without exceeding $1000. A faster panel would be highly preferred nowadays, imo. Like I said, that walmart ROG was the one to get. It had everything, i5-9300H, GTX 1660ti non-maxq, 120hz screen. Yep.
