Extended Warranty on appliances?

139 10 July 29, 2019 at 09:48 PM
Dear Friends,

We recently got a bunch of appliances from Best Buy like the Family Hub Smart Fridge from Samsung, Washer and Dryer, and another fridge.

Can someone guide me on the best deal to get warranty coverage? It used to be (I believe) that Costco Square Trade warranties used to be the best value and cheap! However, now, I think you can only buy warranties from them for TVs when you try to buy warranty at Costco. The only two options I know of are: Geek Squad ($279 for 3 years) and Square Trade website for $299 for 5 years.

Any advice on the best way to go about this please, including your warranty and claim experience? Thank you!

Generally, extended warranties are not worth the investment unless you are talking big dollar items. First off, if you buy with a CC that extends the warranty, you may be able to get an extra year or two there. Secondly, most appliances do not break in the first few years. Like with any insurance, it is all a gamble as to whether something happens or not. Buying an extended warranty on a $500 washer, dryer or dishwasher is probably not going to pay off. If it breaks and needs a service call after the warranty expires, you toss it and buy another one. Different story if you have a $2000-3000 refrig imo.

Also, many utility companies offer appliance and home system warranties on the cheap. Check with your local gas\elec utility. Read the fine print though as some of the policies they have are not worth much imo. For ex, the AC warranty may not cover the compressor, which is a major part that costs a lot if it goes.

This is all great information, I thank you for your wisdom. To your point, at the very least I'd like to be covered for 5 years on that $3000 dollar Samsung fridge. I love the aesthetics and the smart features but I heard the ice box and machine goes bad on it like 90% of the times. I see your point about the washer dryer too, though, those might also have been worth looking into for a 5 year warranty if it was reasonable pricing.

Costco Square Trade made a TON of sense and it was cheap, but I don't believe it'll work on my fridge since I bought from Best Buy. Unless one of you experienced SDers can correct me? I'm sure someone does this route every day on here... Just need someone to chime in with their knowledge.

Thanks in advance to all other responses!

Square trade can be purchased separately online, though again you need to read the fine print. A 5 year plan on a 2000 dollar refig is like $400. Again, imo that is too high and not worth it as you likely get 1 year from the manufacturer and another from the CC company at a min. Even if it breaks once in year 3-5 years, you likely break even unless you get a lemon. And most refrigs will last 10+ years easily.

You're probably right about a regular fridge, but just worried cause this is a Family Hub Samsung fridge. And I highly believe it will have something go wrong after the first two years.... 😢

Lol...call me old fashioned, but all that stuff amounts to paying for gimmicks one never needs or likely will use, but to each his own. Just paying for stuff that may break that is not directly functional to the task imo. I can have my refig door me my phone or HDTV...why would I want to?

Remember if you're all set on Squaretrade- you can always call them directly and ask politely for a discount/promo code- usually good for 10-40% discount. Also check out costco.com I don't know if they changed their policies on major appliances but you used to be able to buy from anywhere (authorized manufacturer dealers within 30 days)- my two cents.

Costco square trade warranty only covers Costco bought items now
if your bying from Costco just buy with Costco credit card so 2 year warranty becomes 4 years no need to buy other warranty,
