One of the best prices as of late. Quality fishing rod that won't break your bank. I own two and like them a lot.

Tempted to get another one, unless you can tell me a better deal!

These rods have a wonderful bend to them. Rather than just bending at the tip, the entire rod bends evenly which is exactly what you want in a rod. This is why these things don't break. They are built with balance in mind. These are VERY light and VERY strong. You won't really find a lighter and stronger rod in 7' at this price range. It is the same price at Dick's if you have gift cards.

Penn battle 4000 medium combo with a salt rod was also on sale for about 9 dollars more at Sam's club. For fresh water you can get an ugly stik elite (non tiger) combo in 7' for 26 dollars also. https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/t/13245052

Wife said no... but I bought it anyway.... oh well, wish me luck.

I have the baitcaster version of this ugly stick. I put a convention reel on it for charter boat fishing. It's tough and reel up fish with ease. I pulled up a good size ling cod from the deep without much of a struggle. Less fun than lighter rod, but can't do that in charter boats. I also jig 8oz lure at the bottom no problem.

I am on the fence. Any input? Thumbs up to activate some fishing alerts.

Dick's selection does not include 7' 1pc, at least I dont see it. Besides, all heavy ones are $80

Any suggestions for a good, low cost reel to pair this with? Would a grandpa and child be able to use this setup for freshwater and saltwater?

I would say no for child/grandpa.
It's a "heavy" action rod so they wont feel much of a fight. I would suggest a lighter action.
There are cheaper options for a beginner.

It really depends on where and what you're fishing for but in general, I think a 3000 size reel with a rod rated for 1/4oz - 1oz is a good starting point.
This is rated for 1oz - 3oz, much too heavy for freshwater fishing (o-k for salt)

https://m.dickssportinggoods.com/...gr10256rod 7' tiger elite 1 piece heavy 59.99 or store pick up in 1 hour locally.

---------------------------------------------------------

For people looking to cast bait from the beach I would have suggested the OffShore Angler 9' beach rod combo with the 7000 reel that was on here for 60. For people looking to fish from a boat the Penn Battle II 4000 reel combo at Sam's is a much better deal and had a lot of stock in my area. For people who need a very light, very good bending rod then this is probably the best you'll find at $60. Just don't expect to be casting far.

Just my cents. I purchased one to pair with my Penn Battle II.

Thanks for the Dick's link. I didn't find that one. It's always good to get it from local, if that's an option.

For grandpa/kids fishing, this is not the right setup. Dick's often have those 2 rod/reel combo for $30 or $35 deal, that would be perfect. Alternatively, if you can get on local Sam's deal, ugly stik elite is better. I used tiger elite to fight fish (big red, big cat, jacks) up to 50 lbs. I haven't tested anything over that yet. For inshore fishing, this pairs great with Daiwa BG (2500 to 5000 or more). That's a unbeatable setup for pretty much all species inshore and near shore. IMHO.

This youth combo might be a good candidate for grand/kid outing at $26 with free returns in case it doesn't work out:

This [amazon.com] will be good for the kid $15 and free return. Unbreakable rod and there are several very entertaining youtube videos about this.
