Would you think these are safer to buy and not have to play the panel lottery since they are refurbished and someone must have taken a look at the screen to certify that there are no defects? Thoughts?

Shipping packaging is the main concern. I was craigslisting similar Walmart refurbished HDTVs a few years back. One order of 11 sets had 8 or 9 with broken screens!

It's crazy!! Who refurbishes something and then doesn't protect it in shipping?

A: Walmart

That was my thought. I almost pulled the trigger on the $440 new but the talk about it made me hesitant. I've been lucky and almost always buy refurbished TV's for that exact reason.
I finally had my 2009 55" Hitachi DLP die again both the bulb and color wheel so I figured it was time to upgrade.

I'm willing to bet they're all customer returns mostly due to the dirty screen / vertical band issue. The refurbisher may only power the tv on and see it works and sell as refurbished. They won't be checking for screen uniformity

On a more positive note, it may not be any different uniformity wise than a new one, yet at a lower price. If you aren't concerned with CC extended warranties and would be able to return within the return window, seems like a nice deal.

This.. there was basically no effort in 'refurbishing'. I got the 607 deal and was fortunate with ordering 1 - got a good screen with some minor banding issues (that I can live with). That said that one was $220, I'm not sure this slightly newer model is worth the extra (assuming you are willing to wait for stock to come back on the old ones) when you are likely to get a panel with issues no matter what.

I would jump on this if I hadn't read so many posts about broken screens...

2 problems. Broken screens.. which seems to be poor packing and/or rough handling by WM employees. The other issue is panel uniformity (not specific to refurbs).. these TCL sets 4-6 series have had repeated issues with vertical/horizontal banding, bright spots, etc.

Which probably explains why there are so many available refurb sets. I am guessing considering this is TCL they have a lower bar for refurbs than a Samsung or LG.

Why do some Walmart refurbs have an warranty via Add-On Services and some don't? Last weeks '517 did but this one does not... Of course when you add it then it's almost near the Rakuten deal new but I do like the ability to pick up / return at a local Walmart.

Not hot.. Tcl new at Costco B&M 50 inch for $269 55 inch $299.. Just walked out with a 50.
This is for a 6 series, Costco does not carry this line for some reason. These have full array backlight and provide a much better picture.

Bought one when it was on sale last week. Had to return due to severe vertical banding issues
