If you are patient, you can pick up a cheap b450 board with a 3700x at microcenter, for not much more. Your energy bill will thank you.

You can find better deals you'd be paying more here for the 50th anniversary edition. If you go with 2nd gen ryzen a 2700 non x would save money and be the same with a small OC.

This or spend double the money for 3900x + a $200 x570 for "future proof"? Mostly gaming and watching movies.

If gaming and watching movies, that's overkill. Get this or a 3600x.

But if you're into higher end console emulation, and certain simulations like Universe Sandbox 2, well good luck trying to collide 100 moons into the earth! Intel takes the cake, in such cases.
But yeah, Ryzen, primarily the 3600x, is the most sanely cost effective, and fully functional cpu out there currently.

I heard the 3600 or 3600x is best if my goal is gaming. Is this comparable?

Sure Zen2 cpus are out, and you can get away with cheaper motherboards, but this is a great motherboard that can't be compared to B450s like MSI Tomahawk.
This motherboard rarely went on sale, and It's pretty much the same price as last year actually.
I know it wouldn't be a good buy to pay the current price at Amazon of $185 but this mobo had the second best tier vrms in all motherboards upto X470s.
Personally, I like to invest in a stable/lasting motherboard when everything is tied to it, including the Windows10 license.
I bought this combo(non gold) last BF(Microcenter combo deal $390) and I have no regret.
I highly recommend this mobo even for the new Zen2 cpus.
